GRIMSBY'S players will go into this afternoon's game with Goole on a high after a convincing win over Driffield last time out.

In what was their first away game of the season, the first team hammered their hosts 5-0 with goals from captain Gaenor Thompson and Anne Lambert, who grabbed two each, and Vicky Pannell.

The new 'own goal' rule brought in this season by the Hockey Association saw Grimsby open the deadlock.

Thompson, pictured, fired the ball from the halfway line into the opposing D where it took a deflection off the keeper's pads and rolled into the net.

Grimsby continued to attack and, thanks to some neat work by Lisa Foster in midfield, gained a number of short corners.

It was from these set plays that Grimsby found their next three goals.

The powerful Lambert grabbed two, while Thompson claimed another from short range.

Pannell grabbed the game's final goal when she reacted quickest to the ball after it had rebounded off the keeper.

After the game, skipper Thompson said: "This was by far our most physical match of the season.

"But we are always up for a challenge and again proved why we are still top of the league."

The ladies' second string were also convincing winners over a depleted Lincoln Roses thirds team last weekend.

Grimsby took advantage of their two player advantage to run out comfortable winners over their Lincolnshire rivals.

A hat-trick from Lisa Robinson was added to by Abby Ruston, who scored two, and Laura Manners, who scored her first goal for the side.

Captain, Jenni Thompson said: "We're very pleased with the team's performance at the minute.

"We are gelling really well and improving every game."

The seconds' next game is on October 20 when they take on Hull University thirds.
