'Large parts of Grimsby neglected,' Lib Dems claim
BURNT-out play equipment, dying plants and broken CCTV cameras are just some of the ways Liberal Democrats claim the current council is neglecting Grimsby.
Councillor Steve Beasant is among the party activists who believe North East Lincolnshire Council's Labour administration is allowing standards to slip.

Edward McMillan-Scott, centre, a British member of the European parliament, pictured with members of the local Liberal Democrat party, during a walk around the East Marsh area of Grimsby. Also pictured are, from left, Leanor Pidgen, Kevin Bakr, Ryan Aisthorpe, Steve Hocknell, Steve Beasant and Nicola Hocknell.
Speaking as European MEP for Yorkshire and Humberside, Edward McMillan-Scott, visiting the town to talk to residents about their concerns, Councillor Beasant said: "Since Labour took control of the council, they have neglected large parts of the borough, especially Grant Thorold Library and park.
"The Library was meant to have this amazing living wall made up of plants, but the filtration system has been out-of-order for some time now and the plants are dying.
Choose from Beef, Lamb or Chicken. Add extra meat, Yorkshire Pudding and roast potatoes for £2.50.

"There has also been an arson attack on the play tower and slide in the park and parents think it is a disgrace that it hasn't been repaired.
"Youngsters have had nothing to play on during the summer.
"The CCTV system in the park has been broken for 18 months now and levels of antisocial behaviour have risen because there is no way of knowing who is responsible.
"The hedges were also allowed to get overgrown which caused more antisocial behaviour as residents didn't have a clear view of the park."
During his visit to North East Lincolnshire, Mr McMillan-Scott was also taken to Sidney Sussex ward, in Cleethorpes, where party members explained problems with overgrown hedges, out-of-control weeds and rubbish.
He said: "The local Lib Dems and I have a common cause as the next European elections are on the same day in 2014 as the local elections.
"I wanted to visit both Grimsby and Cleethorpes to meet residents and speak to them about their concerns and how we might be able to help.
"I was taken to Grant Thorold Library, in Grimsby, which had a state-of-the-art 'living wall' made up of plants that has unfortunately been allowed to die.
"It should never have been allowed to get into that state.
"I also met residents in the Sidney Sussex ward of Cleethorpes."
Despite repeated attempts to contact the Labour party, no one was available for comment at the time of going to press.

“I think it is quite amusing how critic '1812o' writes the same little comments with the same trivial percentages on EVERY article regarding the Lib Dems. It would seem that his only pastime is to keep spinning attacks on this party in the hope that people will believe some of it.
I can sort of understand the comment on fees, albeit that the party didn't lie and the new system is much better and 80% of students will pay less after graduation. The pledge was in 2 parts, but no critic will ever discuss the second part of the pledge that was fulfilled well.
Labour was to raise the fees with no concessions for the poorest or payback threshold which increase in line with inflation - Average of £200 a year payback after earning 21k.
Therefore if it is liars you are concerned about, then look no further than the party '1812o' is supporting. Remember which party lied to the nation to start an unnecessary war? And which party virtually bankrupt our local Council? Labour did.
Tribalism is such a destructive approach.”

“Good God! An MEP actually talking to REAL people??
I don't believe it! MEP's never never never mix with the Great Unwashed. They're far too grand.
Nah .. he must be a hologram. Or mebbe he had to use up his not insubstantial expenses.
He's not staying overnight is he?
Where?? There's nowhere posh enough!
Nope .. it's definitely a cardboard cut-out.
Phew ..”

“I can assure all Lib Dems that when we had a lib dem councillor in our area things most definately did not improve anywhere, at all or at anytime!
Be mindful of what you say as the vast majority of people have a far longer memory than most politicians.
Why have lib dems dropped so low in the polls? Ask yourselves that before starting on any other party.”

“It can't be an expensive business to sweep a street - staff are already on pay and brooms are cheap enough. Spraying weeds? Not expensive either. Cleaning alleyways? One community pride employee (already on pay) and a group of offenders on community service - hardly costs a fortune - certainly a lot less than the £1,000 per clearance we were told it cost. Emptying bins? I'm sure this isn't expensive, but fast food outlets should be made to empty the bins outside their premises when they are full, after all the wrappers all come from the shop - that wouldn't cost anything at all!
There are parts of the town that don't need as much cleaning as others. Why not clean them a bit less often so that other areas that need it can be cleaned more often. That wouldn't cost any extra. Maybe a bit less time spent in places like Freeston Street or Seaford Road and a bit more time where it is needed!
Lack of money isn't the problem here - it's lack of interest!”

“Not defending the Labour administration here, but just consider who implemented the cuts that are leaving local councils in a position where they in turn have to make cuts and are unable to provide services? Cameron of course, the man who would not now be in power if the Lib Dem Leadership had not sold the voters and their principles down the river to keep him there.”

“1812,
Sorry to disappoint you, but the only reason that Labour are showing up well in opinion polls at the moment is because the coalition are having to take steps that are necessary, but not popular. If there was a national election being held now and judgement had to be made on Labours currently stated policies you may see opinion polls change rapidly. There's a saying, don't count your chickens before they are hatched.”

“I don't want to deny any Lib Dems their right to an opinion, but it's a bit rich coming from the party that are currently propping up the Dave & George Show.
Their leader is sidelined more and more, and his "ideas" are always kicked into the long grass. Others like Vince Cable are simply moved on, and unless you knew Danny Alexander was in their party, you'd think he was a "true blue".
I'm not trying to defend our local Labour group, but they did win fair and square. History will ultimately show how successful they are. They're not winning any popularity contests at the moment though.”
