MIDFIELDER Lewis Chalmers has tipped the Mariners for promotion this season – despite being unable to earn a deal at the club.

The 26-year-old had been on trial at Blundell Park and featured in the friendly victory over Grimsby Borough.

However, yesterday managers Rob Scott and Paul Hurst told the former Macclesfield man that they would not be offering him a permanent deal.

But, through his Twitter account, Chalmers praised the Town set-up and tipped the Mariners for success this season.

He posted: "No grudges! Gaffer told me why and I understood!

"All the best this season to GTFC, got a great opportunity!

"Had a chat, it wasn't to be! Great club with ambition, truth be told GTFC should be in the league!"

Hurst said: "We spoke with Lewis after the game on Wednesday.

"He did ok in the game and played well but looking at him, he was probably a bit too similar to what we already have.

"We explained that to him and he was ok with it and he understood.

"In some ways, he's a bit better footballer than we had imagined but he just didn't quite fit the bill for us.

"I think he showed potential and his quality on the ball was good.

"But we're looking to bring in players that are different to what we've already got."
