Lib Dem councillors to boycott mayor-making ceremony
LIBERAL Democrat councillors are set to boycott tonight’s mayor-making ceremony.
As reported, the row over the newly-elected ruling Labour administration’s decision not to make Conservative Melanie Dickerson mayor of North East Lincolnshire has been gathering pace.
Currently deputy mayor, she was expected to be made mayor, as is normal protocol, but last week she discovered that for the first time in the authority’s 16-year history, councillors will be asked to back a different candidate.
The Labour Group will nominate Councillor Mike Burton (Labour, Immingham) and Councillor Peggy Elliott, also Labour, as deputy mayor.

Liberal Democrat leader Andrew De Freitas said: “I will be attending because I shall be giving the vote of thanks to outgoing mayor Susan Pickett, but my other party colleagues have decided not to go because they are unhappy about what has happened. I do not support the Labour nomination. I very strongly disapprove of the way it was done.”
