Despite some adverse weather, more than 4,500 walkers attended the two-week walking festival this year, choosing from 92 walks exploring the landscape and heritage of this spectacular part of Lincolnshire.

As the festivities came to an end, it was also announced that Caistor had been successful in gaining Walkers Are Welcome status – much to the delight of the 400 walkers who took part in this year's final events.

This year's walks ranged from gentle evening strolls, to much more energetic long distance walks and gave people the chance to enjoy the countryside, make new friends and get some fresh air.

The new status means the town will become a real focal point for ramblers in the Wolds, get greater accreditation for its footpaths and attract even more visitors.

Steve Jack, the Lincolnshire Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty manager, said: "Caistor volunteers have got together to put on so many walks, ten walks on the final day is the most we have ever had.

"What is great about this year's festival is that there have been so many walks and the various funding partners have come together to make it happen. They work with our volunteer walk leaders. Without them we would not be able to put on such a fantastic programme."

Stuart Parker, chairman of the Lincolnshire Wolds Walking Festival Steering Group, said "We're delighted so many people have joined us this year, all of whom, no matter what age, seemed to have really enjoyed taking part in the festival.

"I would like to express my thanks to all those who were involved in making this festival a success, particularly the walk leaders, most of whom are volunteers."

The dates for the Lincolnshire Wolds Walking Festival for 2013 have already been set and will be launched on Saturday, May 18, running through until Sunday, June 2.
