IT HAS become as traditional as Christmas turkey and mince pies – and this year’s gritter “shake down run” in Lincolnshire is taking place over the next two weekends.

The county council’s 43 gritters will be taking to the roads for one final run-through before the cold weather begins.

The executive member for highways and transportation, Councillor William Webb, said: “We don’t want people to think we know something about the weather that they don’t!

“This shake down run is something our gritter drivers do every year while the sun is still shining, to make sure their vehicles are in top condition with no further maintenance needed and also to check their gritting routes are clear.

“They always have one last run through before winter weather begins. If you do see our gritters when you’re out and about, do feel free to give the drivers a wave. They do a tremendous job, helping to keep us moving on the roads.”

Just over a third of the county’s roads are salted – including all A and B roads – exceeding government expectations, and each gritter has its own specific route.

The Gritter Twitter feed is also back online, ready to start sharing live updates as the temperatures fall, which can be found at @LincsCC_Winter

Councillor Webb added: “Our Gritter Twitter is also back again, so please do make the most of it and sign up for real time information. This is something we launched last year that was really successful, with almost 1,000 followers at its height.”

“oh well, at least Look North came to Binbrook after the disaster in 2010..on my local roads, they even manage to keep the mountain road open in the depths of winter and they are over 1500ft above sea level!”

“Presumably this year we will be spreading salt in the rain again, so it covers my car in corrosive salt solution and peppers my windscreen with grit and then not be spreading when it is icy or snow has fallen, because....?”
