A DIRECT rail service connecting Grimsby and Cleethorpes with the capital could be on the way – but not until 2016.

The Government yesterday set out the requirements for private companies bidding to run the East Coast line from next year.

As well as offering a range of new services from next spring, the winning operator will also have to spell out how it might run a regular service between Cleethorpes and London from December 2016.

The new service will be made possible by the introduction of a new, faster fleet of Super Express Trains.

“The Government shift the goalposts again. We were told that the Cleethorpes to London service would start in the December 2010 timetable. The Government should stop interfering and let railway companies do the planning themselves.”
