IT WAS a "full house" at a Grimsby community centre when bingo united two estates from the same ward.

St Martin's Action Group of the Nunsthorpe estate are now holding their weekly bingo sessions at the Grange Community Centre, after they were forced to hand over the keys of St Martin's Church Hall last Tuesday.

The move has been heralded as the start of a new era for the once-troubled residents' association – and group founder Debbie Hill says it is "onwards and upwards" from here.

She said: "We are still having all the fun we had at St Martin's Church Hall and we are still working in the same way. We are very grateful to be here and hopefully we will build a relationship with the people on the Grange.

"It will bring the south ward closer together. We all live in the same area, where there is a shortage of activities to do. Hopefully, by working together, it will make things more positive for everyone."

As reported, St Martin's Action Group was set up in 2004 in St Martin's Church to provide activities for residents on the Nunsthorpe estate and to help turn their lives around.

It was behind the successful, but now defunct, Funhouse project, which received Government praise in 2005, with antisocial behaviour tsar Louise Casey describing those involved as national examples.

In 2008, the Funhouse closed down after running into difficulties, but Nunsthorpe Together, as St Martin's was known by that point, continued to hold community activities, such as bingo, there.

They were forced to leave the church hall after the Parochial Church Council (PCC) claimed it was owed £140,000 in unpaid rent and maintenance costs last week.

Some of the regular bingo players have stopped coming since the move, but Debbie is hopeful things will improve.

She continued: "It will take a bit of getting used to. It was like a home to a lot of people, but the St Martin's Action Group is back and it will be onwards and upwards from here.

"We have lots planned – who knows what the future might bring for us?"

And although it doesn't feel quite like home yet, Nunsthorpe residents who relied on the bingo sessions to socialise are determined to give it a go.

Helen Keningale, 69, has been going to the bingo since it started. She said: "I like it here and without the bingo, I wouldn't be able to go out. I don't like going too far at night, but they have arranged a taxi for me, so it is perfect."

Jackie Holmes, 62, and Rose Ling, 64, are avid bingo players.

Jackie said: "It doesn't feel like it is our own place yet, but we are very grateful to Grange Together and it is a nice building."

Rose added: "We don't feel at home here – after nine years it was like a family – but it is good of them."

Bingo classes are held on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, from 7.30pm, and CJs Dance classes start on Saturday from noon to 2pm.

“To SHARDEWEE, I read your comment aimed at me to which i found very amusing, DEBBIE HILL only hires the facilities from you is that so?? she has nothing to do with the centre other than this??? then why when we look on facebook at the Grange Together Group which is a closed group, DEBBIE HILL, KYLE HILL and HOLLIE HILL are all members??? and why is it a closed group anyone in the community should be able to join as it is a COMMUNITY CENTRE, Is it because YOURSELF and ONE OTHER vet who can and cant join???? not very community spirited is it. Also isnt it against the rules that you shouldnt have two members of the same family especially if they are a couple on the main panel??? so why is Dave Waller and his Partner Jackie Thompson both part of the administration panel???? Not good is it when you spout your mouth off abouth the right and wrong way to do things is it.....”

“In reply to MJA 1958, the Parochial Church Council asked Nunsthorpe Together to leave the church hall, which as the owners they had every right to do. However, I was not involved with the Fun House project, therefore I am not aware of all the facts regarding the rent dispute between Nunsthorpe Together and the Church. Because of this I refuse to take sides on the issue. As I stated previously it is up to the two organisations to resolve this issue.”

“You have absolutely no idea what I have or have not done for my community. What I do know is what you and yours have done - left a massive debt of £140,000.00 and are blaming everyone else but yourself.

Maybe the council and other bodies should now realise that it is pure folly to allow amateurs to run projects such as this. To handle such sums of money you need someone with at least the very basics of accounting - and that doesn't mean someone who can cash a giro.......”

“MJA1958 Bet you as a keyboard warrior have done nothing for your community

Get a grip and check the facts
2004 St martins was hired and the community group SMCAG was formed they invested thier own money to put on activities such as bingo Auctions dance the profits from the activities and the cafe went into the SMCAG bank account which paid all bills regarding the back hall

After 4 successful years of community engagement in 2008 the television awarded 45 thousand towards the Funhouse project in the church BUT to to the project and receive the 340 thousand NRF Funding a professional board had to be in place this board was formed called NUNSTHORPE TOGETHER and the directors were 3 from the church 2 from the police 2 from business and 2 from the community all money from funding was spent by that board on the church and its build ect may i add the 2 from the community were not debbie and steve all details are available on companies house website When this board was formed why was there no mention in minutes of unpaid rent ect

This new board made SMCAG shut its bank account AND BANK ALL THE BACK HALLS PROFITS
AS the church signatories for the new bank account would be in control of paying all bills all bank statements are available of all money the back hall banked into that account which was far far more than the bills for the back hall

JUNE 2010 the community became aware that a police officer who sat on the Nunsathorpe Together board was claiming wages from the funding while sitting on the board ,a urgent meeting was called and a new board was set up in Nov 2010 after a agm again consisting of police church and business yet again nothing was metioned about unpaid debts or backdated rent

Dec 2010 funhouse was closed by the staff due to the floor being unsafe after many many times being reported to the board

APRIL 2011 The board decide to wind things up after they left debts of 18 thousand as stated in minutes still no mention of 140 thousand pounds ,the back hall ask for the site to stay open after a meeting at St james a promise of a lease was made so the community side paid of the debts of the Nunsthorpe Together board still no mention of 140 thousand unpaid bills

June 2012 after many emails requesting the lease for the back hall a letter arrived stating the debt of 140 thousand pay up or get out

have you ever wandered why this debt appeared after the church jumped of the board maybe its because as they were responsible for finances and bill paying they realised there was no money left as it had been spent badly by the board

FROM 2004 to date the back hall which has always been run by the community has always paid its bills plusd spent many thousands adding disabled ramps three new toilet blocks maintained the upkeep of the grounds for free
The church o had a massive refurbishment at the prayer end if the truth be known more money was spent on the church and electrics painting legal fees heating light than was ever spent on the real project the towers was second hand the games were second hand
The only new thing the community got out of all the money was the laser quest that was bought for 40 thousand yet the board sold it for 8 thousand less than a year later and yes the evidence is available to prove it oh and during the time the funhouse was open all bills heat light water ect for the church end was also paid for by Nunsthorpe Together

The only thing the community did wrong in all this is hand a really sucessful community group and business to the so called proffesionals who managed it very wrong

no one can take away the fact that in 9 years the back hall the community and its volunteers have delivered many many successful projects won many national and regional awards appeared in good news stories in the telegraph as well as putting grimsby on the television for positive activities and the thanks they get is the professionals walked away and let the community take the blame for the wrongdoing”

“It's a good job we all don't have such a cavalier attitude to £140,000.00 worth of debt. Meanwhile life goes on you say?

What a typical response from Barwood. Lurch from one disaster to another without a thought for the carnage that has been left behind.

I really hope the church sue the pants off them.”

“The issue of back rent is a matter for Nunsthope Together and the Church to sort out. Meanwhile life goes on. It is now up to Nunsthorpe Together to make this new venture work. Maybe they will be better without their own premises. The hiring arrangement with Grange Community Centre may be the ideal solution. We will see.”

."As stated in the article, this is a new start for Nunsthorpe Together. Good luck."

How about clearing up one mess prior to making another (and they will)?”
