MP Mitchell decides not to return from holiday for debate
GRIMSBY MP Austin Mitchell has decided not to return from holiday in the United States for today's Parliamentary recall.
He said: "I have decided, after extensive consultation of airline timetables and availability, not to return to Westminster for Thursday's one-day debate about the riots.

AWAY: Austin Mitchell.
"I am fully briefed on Grimsby, where there has been no riot problem. I am unlikely to be called in what will be a crowded, brief debate. There won't be a vote in which my presence would be necessary and I feel that I have nothing original to say on the riots, except, of course, to deplore and condemn them and the lawlessness that has broken out in deprived areas in London, Birmingham and other cities.
"This demands a tough response, but we also need to ask what has caused this midsummer madness?

"Though I have no knowledge of local flashpoints, I consider that if we have areas where young people live in an atmosphere of hopelessness, without jobs or futures and threatened by cuts in training, education and benefits, we're bound to get problems.
"I don't feel justified in spending over £3,000 of taxpayer's money and flying 14 hours to arrive, as the schedules tell me I would, just at the end of David Cameron's speech. This isn't something that can be dealt with in a day of speechmaking without a vote. It demands a reconsideration and reversal of damaging, job-destroying Government policies."

“Well Mr Mitchell. Dont blame the government as regards to benifits. It was YOUR government that increased the benifits at its last budget, before you were kicked out.”

“I really hate to agree with Austin Mitchell, but it would have been a waste of time him flying home.
Although Im happy to agree that he has nothing original to say!”

“I cant see how conscription or national service would help. Sign them up for that and next time a riot happens they wont be a mob, they will be a well train squad of ex soldiers!”

“I see the BBC have now ordered their presenters to make sure the riots are specifically described as ENGLISH, and not British .. in case they upset the Scots, Welsh and Irish.
Fair do's ..
Just as long as they also make sure that when reporting on the vast amounts of cash English taxpayers are forced to send north of the border on a depressingly regular basis, that they specifically describe it as ENGLISH subsidies to the Scots!
Grrr
Has anyone noticed too, that when groups of men in ethnic communities band together to protect their neighbourhoods from gangs of yobs, that they are praised by the politico's and the BBC as fine upstanding members of the community (which indeed they are) .. but when white middle-aged men do the same, they're described as extreme right vigilantes?”

“Let us be reasonable for a second. Regardless of how effective you think Austin is as an MP.
If your employer demanded you return from a foreign holiday that you had paid for out of your own pocket, the first thing you would do is insist that they pay for the holiday that they have effectively ruined. Which is more than likely where the £3000 comes from. Not to mention the fact that I doubt that anyone would return for their employer.
He can't win. If he had of returned, any refund he got/air fare etc would have made headline news; "Labour MP wastes thousands attending meeting".”

“I dont like Cameron but at least he is the first prime minister to stand up against the rioters ***mon Mr Cameron bring back conscription or training camps for the young, make them clean up our streets and see what its like after they have destroyed them.”

“Well Mr Mitchell I doubt you would have bothered to come back even if the riots were in Grimsby; I think your response to that would have been, the damage is done and I have people who will keep an eye on things until I get back. Is Mr Cameron not you boss; surely if he recalls you you should do as you're told; I know I have to when my boss tells me to do something !”
