THE area's newest MP today said he would be ready to ask "difficult questions" if investigations uncovered any safety issues at the Total Lindsey Oil Refinery.

MP for Immingham and Cleethorpes, Martin Vickers, met with LOR boss Nigel Tranter yesterday following Tuesday's explosion, and said he felt the refinery had been "shattered" by the consequent death of Robert Greenacre, 24.

Mr Vickers told the Telegraph that following a "sombre" meeting with Mr Tranter, he was happy the company had reacted in the right way and followed Government-issued procedures – but added that he would be ready to ask "difficult questions" if the Health And Safety Executive (HSE) found any problems.

However, he said he would not speculate on the cause of the incident until the agency's report came out.

As reported, workers downed tools on Wednesday – some as a mark of respect for Mr Greenace, others amid safety fears. And on Thursday, hundreds were sent home by Total after investigations revealed asbestos contamination in parts of the site.

Concerns have also been raised by unions over the standard of equipment used at refineries such as LOR, although a Total spokesman said: "The refinery is a modernised refinery.

"We annually invest millions of pounds in renovation and maintenance of equipment and also building new projects to meet future demands.

"There's a large team of professional inspectors who are continually maintaining the condition of the equipment to ensure safe operations."

“John, In the desert - I understand your comments, but the current stance (supported by the HSE) is that asbestos is safer being left in place providing it is in good condition and is monitored with an effective management system. Removal of asbestos, even under strictly controlled conditions introduces more risks to health. Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that LOR has had a program of asbestos removal in place for a good while now and have probably removed more than most companies and at great expense, so I don't think they can be criticised for not being willing to spend money.

Regarding Sarah O'Connell's comments I agree with people getting themselves up to speed with reporting / documenting possible exposures, but is this forum the place to start shaming individual companies? This is verging on being libelous so don't be shocked if you have call from a solicitor yourself.”

“Vickers' Early life entry in Wikipedia says:

Born in Cleethorpes, North East Lincolnshire, Vickers was educated at Havelock School (then a grammar school) and Grimsby College.

I wonder who wrote this over egged piece, which Vickers should rectify asap because Havelock was not a grammar school.

Was Havelock in those days a secondary modern? Now that's a difficult question ;) .”

    “Caring Conservative.

Yes the conservatives have always had the working classes "IN THEIR SIGHTS," a Freudian slip as you so delicately put it. They're always looking to see how much they can turn the screw on them and control them by cuts and increased levels of unemployment. It looks as though we're in for a half-decade of total misery, which could even outdo Thatcher's malice, and the young who've never experienced Tory pain are about to receive a massive shock, aided and abetted by the Lib Dems, who will deservedly be relegated to history in five years time.”

There will be no brushing findings under the carpet .We Conservatives have always had the interests of the working classes in our sights and iam sure you will be happy with the outcome.”

“IMPORTANT INFORMATION. For all workers involved in the incident at HDS3.

As I'm sure you are all aware that we have possibly been exposed to asbestos contamination, and due to the lack of information and misinformation provided by Jacobs, we are currently in the process of putting measures in place to protect ourselves for the future.

Unfortunately, there are no medical test for asbestos contamination and very little we can do until such time as someone becomes ill, which could be 20-30 years.

I have been in contact with a solicitor specialising in asbestos claims who has advised that our best course is to contact as may of the workforce as possible to obtain their personal accounts of events from the day of the fire to being sent home on Thursday morning. This information would remain confidential and be lodged with the solicitor until such time as a claim could be made. A stronger case could be mounted with the strength of numbers behind us.

I'm sure some of you may already have contacted your own solicitors, but we feel that keeping as much information together in one place can only be beneficial to all of us.

If you are interested please email your details to HDS3contamination@hotmail.co.uk
We need your name, contact info, the company you were working for and your account of events.

I would be grateful if you could pass this information on to as many of your collegues as possible as, at this time, we have no idea when, or if, any of us will be back at work.

    Thankyou.”
