A DISUSED area of Grimsby's Nunsthorpe Estate has been transformed into a bloom-ing focal point.

Students at Nunsthorpe Community School have cleared a piece of derelict land next to Primal Gym as part of Community In Bloom.

The initiative gave pupils at schools throughout North East Lincolnshire the chance to work together to revamp some of the area's eyesores.

The Grimsby and Cleethorpes In Bloom committees joined forces for the one-off event, which saw many teams spruce up various locations needing a facelift.

Angie Turner, learning mentor and gardening co-ordinator at Nunsthorpe Community School, said: "The pupils absolutely loved taking part and we would love to be involved again next year.

"The area was a mess before and it looked absolutely wonderful by the end.

"Young wardens are going to be managing the site and some of our students want to join them now they have seen what they can do."

Ernie Brown, chairman of Grimsby In Bloom, is delighted at the impact the project has had on the Nunsthorpe.

He said: "This year's Community in Bloom project on the Nunsthorpe Estate was a great success on many counts. Firstly, the children managed to turn around a dilapidated, neglected corner of Great Grimsby into an oasis of beauty.

"Secondly, through their hard work and perseverance they battled through the rubbish and proved to themselves that the world we live in can be changed for the better, even if only a little bit at a time.

"Thirdly, we all learnt that through co-operation and teamwork great things can be achieved.

"Lastly, but most importantly, we all had fun.

"Working together, young and old alike shared sunshine and laughter throughout the two creative days we spent together."
