"I WISH I could have done more to save her."

Those were the words of a newlywed who has spoken of his torment after a woman died following being hit by a car outside his house.

Stephen Househam was one of the first on the scene when Belinda Atha was hit by a blue BMW at the junction of Convamore Road and Eleanor Street at about 11am on Friday.

He dialled 999 and administered first aid until ambulance crews arrived but the 41-year-old later died at Grimsby's Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital.

Mr Househam, who is an area manager for a cleaning firm, said: "I was outside smoking and was facing in the direction of Pasture Street when I heard an horrendous thud and scream.

"As I turned around I saw a woman hitting a car, going over the top and landing on the ground.

"I ran into the house and grabbed the phone and dialled 999. Then I picked up my first aid pouch and ran back out with the operator still on the line.

"I made sure she was in the recovery position and that her airways were clear but it was obvious that it was very serious from the injuries she had."

As reported on Saturday – pictured right – Ms Atha, of Lichfield Road, Grimsby, was hit by the blue BMW as it overtook a navy Mercedes Jeep at the junction.

Her friend, who she was with at the time, managed to jump out of the way before the collision.

Police placed a full road closure on Convamore Road, including the junctions with Ladysmith Road, Pasture Street, Wellington Street and Eleanor Street.

A 31-year-old man was arrested at the scene and has been released on bail to a date in March, pending further enquiries.

It was a tragic experience for Mr Househam, who had only married his wife, Di , three days before the collision – on Valentine's Day.

She said: "It is just so very, very sad.

"She was probably only popping to the shops or something and then this happens."

Mr Househam added: "We would like to pass on our condolences to Ms Atha's family and tell them I wish I could have done more to save her.

"It's not something I'll ever be able to forget and it has affected me a lot."

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: "Police have spoken to a number of witnesses and would now like to speak to anyone who may have information and has not yet come forward, and anyone who may have seen the vehicles prior to the collision."

Anyone who can help is asked to call Humberside Police on 101, quoting log 184 of February 17.
