MARKET Rasen Racecourse is gearing up for its most popular event of the year – and is expecting a crowd of more than 10,000.

The course's Boxing Day fixture, when it beats the wintry weather, is one of the most popular sporting events in Lincolnshire.

Since the turn of millennium, crowds have averaged at 10,500.

And this year, racing fans have an added incentive – spectators on Boxing Day will receive a free ticket to a regular fixture of their choice at Rasen in 2013.

Pip Kirkby (pictured), the racecourse's general manager, said: "We're all geared up for a great family Christmas day out in Lincolnshire with our Boxing Day racing fixture.

"It is always our most popular racing day of the year, with crowds since the turn of the millennium averaging 10,500. We're laying on new attractions this year, including skating and free meals for 200 children.

"Spectators will also get a free ticket back to the racecourse in 2013. With all accompanied children admitted free and advance admission for adults starting at just £10, Boxing Day at Market Rasen Racecourse is also a very affordable Christmas day out for families."

People are urged to buy their Boxing Day tickets well in advance, and turn up early on the day to avoid traffic jams. The gates of the racecourse will open at 10am for a first race time of 12.25pm. The last of the six races, with the feature event during the afternoon being the Clugston Lincolnshire National, is at 3.20pm.

Also among the attractions for Boxing Day race-goers are free meals for the first 200 children, free skating, a lucky dip draw with prizes worth up to £1,000, and an appearance by Santa Claus.
