Martin Vickers MP on the horse meat scandal
Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers writes in the Telegraph today about the horse meat scandal - here is an extract…
“EVENTS dear boy, events”, as Harold MacMillan famously said, is what governments should fear.
The unexpected will always happen. The events can often be the responsibility of some outside agency but however powerless ministers are on any given issue the buck will always stop with them.
In the case of the horsemeat scandal the Food Standards Agency are the responsible people and when all goes well, that’s fine, but as soon as problems arise it’s the poor old minister who is in the limelight.
Like the BSE issue in the 1990s it has crept up almost unnoticed and is causing the Government no end of problems. In part that is because we have “exported” responsibility for food and farming policy to the EU.
