Masked 'journalists' try to take pictures in Grimsby hospital's A&E department
TWO masked men – believed to be photographers working for the national tabloid media – attempted to take pictures inside A&E at Grimsby's Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital.
It is thought that the men, who were wearing hats and scarves pulled over their faces, were trying to get photographs in the wake of a report criticising high death rates at the hospital.

'WEARING HATS AND SCARVES': It is thought that the masked men were trying to get photographs in wake of a report criticising high death rates at the hospital.
As reported, almost 300 more people than "expected" died during or shortly after being treated in hospitals managed by the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust in one year.
The figures were revealed last week as part of the first phase of a Transforming Health Review, which looked at death rates at the three hospitals managed by the trust, in Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Goole.

Shortly after the review was published – highlighting concerns over staffing levels and hygiene – two masked men were seen walking into cubicles in the A&E department and are believed to have been attempting to take photographs of patients.
One patient, who did not wish to be named, said: "These men were walking in and out of the cubicles with their faces covered and looked like they were trying to take pictures on their cameras.
"They were in A&E for a while and then they moved on.
"It was quite intimidating because nobody knew what they were doing or why they were there."
A spokesperson for the trust said they believed the men were journalists from a tabloid newspaper.
Jug Johal, head of transport, car parking and security, at the hospital, said: "Security were called to the emergency care centre after reports of suspicious activity.
"However, when security arrived the people had left the department.
"A search of the local area was undertaken but they had already left the site. An incident form was completed."
As reported, 40 recommendations were made in the report to help the trust reduce its mortality rates. These included the need to urgently review nurse staff levels, resolving the pressure on beds at Grimsby's hospital and improve the use of bedside documents.
The trust claims many of the recommendations have already been addressed.

“Glebe82 you wrote
"It's a hospital not a care home... Shame on the family for not bothering to check on them for 2 days."

“Glebe82 the family had checked by phone daily and had phoned 2 hours before visiting times and told she was fine and there had been no mention of the person being discharged as the operation had been to repair a broken hip sustained in a fall. On the last 5 occasions both to the hospital and Social services it has been requested that she be put permanently in a home as the family was scared of her falling and hurting herself badly as there is no one available to be there around the clock, but they thought better, so it is not just the hospital to blame and to be sent home without any member of the family being notified although they have family telephone numbers and family phoned on the day they discharged and was told nothing of the intention to send the person home is disgusting. The family member is also a pensioner themselves and not of best health themselves who is next of kin and responsible for the care and is reliant of family to take them where they need to be ie shopping and getting to the hospital to visit”

“@Glebe82 They had phoned daily and even that morning and had been told she would be in hospital for at least 2 weeks and to have a break and not to worry.Even if the person had been put in respite at a residential home seeing the operation was to repair a broken hip that had been sustained in a fall that would of been better so that the person could be assessed and receive physio. The family have asked on the last 5 occasions that the person has been admitted after a fall be put into residential care as there is no one available to be there around the clock and the person is not safe to be left on their own as they will eventually become badly injured with falling”

“Not one to criticise the NHS, I think given the economic climate, we are lucky to still have free healthcare. Although this facility is tested to the limit by the amount of treatment which quite frankly should be refused, ie dragging addicts back from the brink of death just to go straight out and overdose again and idiots who drink 10 pints and think they can drive a car. However and I hate saying this, our hospital is filthy and care is barely adequate, maybe not through the direct fault of our nursing staff, its probably more to do with poor management and understaffing. I have met with doctors who can barely speak english and staff is rotated so fast there is no consistency of care and a massive lack of communication between departments. If the hospital is really as bad as is reported then I am glad the tabloids (if it was actually them) are interested, the trust may be forced into actually doing something about it instead of just issuing another statement....rant over!!”

“When I was admitted last year two foreign men well dressed came into the ward I was in, took a look around I spoke to one of them he never answered and left nobody including the nurses had a clue who they were.
very worrying.”

“Not surprised by the figures as they send elderly people home who live on their own that have fallen on numerous occasions and on the last occasion broke bones in the fall and had to under go an operation. This elderly person was sent home 4 days after the operation with a walking frame and family were not informed until they turned up at hospital 2 days later to visit as they took the chance to go away for a few days, the hospital never even informed the company that the family use to go in on a daily basis like the hospital promised it would do before discharging the elderly person.”
