TONIGHT North East Lincolnshire Council’s plans to lower speed limits across the borough will come under the spotlight once more.

As reported, as part of a drive to reduce the number of children killed or injured on our roads – and other accidents – NELC has proposed imposing a £500,000 scheme which would lower the speed limit of roads ranging from the A180 to residential streets.

If approved, the measures would include reducing the limit on B1210 from Healing to Great Coates from 50mph to 40mph, and slowing traffic coming through Healing village from 40mph to 30mph – both of which will be discussed at the parish council tonight.

The council will meet in Healing Village Hall from 7pm and all are welcome to attend.

Other proposed changes include:

Reducing the speed limit from national to 50mph on the A180 from Pyewipe roundabout to Lockhill roundabout; the A18 from Laceby Top roundabout to the county boundary just outside Ludborough; and the A1136 from Great Coates roundabout to Europarc.

Imposing 20mph limits on all but “strategic roads” in the East Marsh and Sidney Sussex wards.

Slowing traffic passing through Aylesby to 30mph from 40mph.

Creating new 20mph zones around Old Clee School, Grimsby; The Leas School, Waltham; and Stanford School, Laceby.

The news of the plans has also sparked a great deal of debate among readers of the Grimsby Telegraph.

Here is just a taste of what you have had to say:

WHAT’S the point of introducing reduced speed limits when drivers won’t take a blind bit of notice to them?

The speed limit on the road to Healing is suppose to be 40mph, but drivers still drive fast – even when the kids are going to school.

Sadly, it’s a “I have to get there quick, blow to the speed limit” attitude, until there’s an accident.

Also, Aylseby Road is another road the council want to deal with. There are drivers on this road who are total idiots. It won’t be until someone ends up dead or seriously injured when the council will do something about it.

Iggypop23

BRING back the Tufty Club and cycling proficiency in schools. Give the kids a copy of the Highway Code or a version of it that relates to pedestrians. Put the onus on roads are for vehicles. It would make sense in my opinion.

Davendogs

IS DAVE Poucher really on this planet? Does he realise what the affect of reducing the speed limit will do to this town?

It will cause more of a backlog on exhaust-smoke fumed roads than it is already, cigarette butt gutters from chain smoking individuals, mental hospital overload ... should I continue?

No, I wonder if he has actually sat down and thought this through thoroughly enough.

It is about time the people had a bit more say. Let them tell you what should be done.

Put Grimsby and Cleethorpes back on the map, after all, it was once a thriving mini-city until someone decided to put us at the end of a dead end. Who would want to come here on holiday?

Ask the people for heaven’s sake.

maybebaby2

PEOPLE should get up earlier and make more time to head to work or kids to school.

The roads don’t kill people, it’s the idiots who drive on them. Time and time again, people are always rushing to get somewhere these days, but it’s their own fault for getting up late.

As for drink drivers, that’s another matter, but please make time to get to your destinations as you won’t feel pressured and aggravated by traffic, traffic signals and buses, etc.

Jensen125

NEVER seen what a lower speed limit will do for “better safety”, as the real culprits don’t abide by the ones we have now, let alone a lower limit.

I see lower speed limits as an “eco” matter, because all cars do more mpg at 50mph than 70mph.

Lane discipline is a problem in Grimsby, as many motorists don’t read the signs and use the bus lanes by the college or near Ramsdens, that are only operational part time.

Youroadsafety

THE stretch of the A180 mentioned takes around a minute to travel. I hardly think that a reduction in the speed limit on this small section will have an adverse effect on the businesses in Grimsby.

Adegy61

I CAN’T believe the council can waste our money like this.

Reducing speed limits on roads like the A180 is ludicrous and does nothing to increase business. It just makes any location in Grimsby more time-consuming to reach.

I don’t recollect seeing kids playing on there and the accidents have been caused by unlit cyclists, drunks or druggies, or foreign lorry drivers ploughing into lines of stationary traffic or changing lanes without due care and attention.

I suspect this applies to many of the other locations mentioned, however, a better solution for areas around schools would be to enforce a no-parking zone of half a mile from every school gate.

It’s parking that’s the problem, not the speeds. Try doing more than walking pace along Hardys Road in Cleethorpes at school times.

Perhaps even better would be to go back in time and enforce children to use their catchment school.

It is a mystery how our accident and/or death rates warrant action if, as these clowns seem to think, speed is the cause of all road evil.

Exeter44

THE reduction in children KSI on our roads is obviously a most laudable goal.

However, I wonder what, in the vast majority of cases is the actual cause of the accidents?

Or are we attempting to reduce speeds for the sake of it but missing the actual cause? As other posters have suggested, are we on a slippery slope to a red flag in front of every vehicle or all footpaths with guard railings except at designated crossing points?

As for the current 20mph zones (I live in one) they were a complete waste of money – everybody ignores them without fear, with the distinct lack of police traffic patrols.

Hooligan365

TYPICAL backward-thinking Grimsby. As cars get safer and the stopping distance with a newer car get reduced, Grimsby want to reduce speeds, what with the single-file traffic through the town (Scartho Road, Grimsby/Cleethorpes Roads, Weelsby Road etc) we can’t get any slower.

People need to get out of this cul-de-sac of the country and see what the real world is like in a city where people can drive and can cross the road sensibly.

Jamojambo

WHAT is wrong with letting traffic flow and keeping it moving like it’s supposed to?

Money would be better spent on pelican crossings at schools and educating kids that while most of the time a driver will see you when you don’t bother to look or listen and step into the road – as most drivers have come to expect this and slow accordingly – the odd driver won’t. And school kids on bikes ... well.

Kerfuddled

WHAT does it matter what the speed limit is? Speeders will still speed and with the distinct lack of traffic police, they will get away with it.

To get caught speeding in this town you have to be very unlucky.

WestMartian

IT STRIKES me that some of the changes are for the better and should be applauded, however, some of the ideas are ill-thought through.

The A18 Barton Street: the Council’s own data says that the average speed is 51.6mph, therefore why reduce the speed limit to 50? The average speed will then drop in the region of 10mph to 41mph.

This is a clear case of tinkering for the sake of it. If the council acted in a responsible manner and thought things through properly, and didn’t jump on the nearest band wagon, people would have more respect for the work they do that is sensible.

“Thanks for that snippet Mindofmyown about the £420,000 and Allun for further embellishing the point about self serving Balfour Beatty - its so blatant isn't it. Does this smack of corruption or what!

We can help Hayden's petition further.

I spoke to other ABD members who ran successful campaigns (Manchester Against Road Tolls [MART] for example), they point to two directions

The TaxPayers' Alliance, they have website for contact. MindofYourOwn's point about the slashing of £420k issue on vunerable people is just of information which the TaxPayers' Alliance will take issue to. So it would help by all petitioners swamping them and take notice. This is just the sort of thing the TPA want to hear.

The other is (don't moan) contacting your MP. Austin Mitchell MP and Martin Vickers (MP). From what I gather if they get more than three letters/e-mail from their constituents on one particular topic, then they are obliged to act since it indicates that constituents are not content. Most folks seldom write in, so when they do, it means a raw nerve has been hit.

Lets give Hayden all the help he needs.”

“If all of these speed reductions are supposed to be put in place to make the roads safer, could Humberside Police explain why they positioned a speed camera van in College Road, East Halton on Tuesday? I presume the 30mph limit is due to the primary school, so why put speed cameras on the road during half term holiday when there's not even a paper boy in sight at 9am?

Pure money making scam - they'll never convince me otherwise.”

    .
"It's a funny world when a Labour Council complains about having to make cuts to it's budget and then decides to spend £500,000 on reducing speed limits and pays for it by cutting back on help for vulnerable people and slashing the amount they spend on supporting people by £420,000!"

I think it's even funnier that a Balfour Beatty survey can reccomend half a million pounds of work to itself! At what point in our austerity do the council say stop and freeze expenditure until the council tax payers have some spare money.”

“I'm not saying Grimsby Rd is slow moving but there are days I could play noughts and crosses with the kids in the back seat of a car. Your move, I'll make mine at the next lights. When it's really busy you could play backgammon. During the summer months you could hold a chess tournament between Riby and the fitties.”

    Spot on,
The problem there would be it's a different department and different part of the budget, which is given to them to spend. They won't give it away even if it common sense.”

What is the Matter with these people, apart from the 'End Spend'

Budget money put aside and has to be spent by April, that's more than likely whats happening here, they should do something about the road surfaces let alone putting more signs up.

The amount of Potholes appearing, they don't need calming measures, you just can't go at 20-30 on most roads as it is!”

“You would think that someone on the council would be interested in how their ideas are going down and be following the comments here. It would follow that they might like to pipe up and join in. It would indicate democracy, maybe earn a few brownie points. That is not the case though. It leads me to believe they are all hunckered down, afraid and dreaming up even more ways to make up for their innability. Some would call it spitefull. That or they are all stuck in traffic. Be some poetic justice in that. Not that any member of the council would realise, oh no. It will be everybody elses fault.”

“With a stupid one way system, lots of lights, all timed to hit red as you arrive, & possibly even lower speed limits, it will soon be time to ditch the car & walk, I guess this is what the council are after, just a shame we have to pay for there stupidity

So how many people were killed on Grimsby roads today by a speeding driver?

Unless your in a dragster you don't have time to build up any speed as you hit a red light every 100m driving around in circles, trying to go from A to B”
