HEAVY snowfall has arrived in North East Lincolnshire this afternoon and is causing disruption across the borough.

A Met Office Amber warning is currently in force for snow and ice and drivers are being advised to be wary of icy stretches on the roads in the area.

During the evening rush hour, problems have been reported on some of the main routes in Grimsby including Cleethorpe Road, Bargate and Peaks Parkway.

North East Lincolnshire Council’s crews are out and about gritting the road networks in the borough in order to minimise disruption.

The council also has teams and equipment on stand-by to treat priority footways in and around town centres.

Meanwhile, the AA is advising drivers not to be complacent, even on local journeys, as its research shows that three-quarters of motorists are ill-prepared for winter weather.

The AA/Populus survey of 20,073 AA members also found that women (83 per cent) are more likely to leave it to chance compared to men (70 per cent).

Andy Smith, AA patrol of the year, says: “The next few days could be a bit of a sharp wake-up call for drivers who aren’t adequately prepared.

"It’s just not worth taking a gamble and it’s no effort to put a few extra warm layers and other winter essentials in the car.

“It’s easy to think of the car as like a big overcoat – a home from home – but winter weather is often quite unpredictable, so in case of an accident or delay, you want to make sure you’re warm, dry and can call for assistance, if required."

“why should schools close early? makes sense to keep them in school normal hours then there is less snowballing going on at house windows and cars. ~When I was young (here we go again) we went to school no matter what the weather. Never had a car so had to walk and it was very hilly where I lived but we manged it. Get the wellies on the kids feet and there is no reason to close the schools”

“The reason everywhere grinds to a halt is because we get snow once every blue moon and nobody learns lessons, including us lot. We got warned to prepare and most never did. Heavy snow at rush hour = chaos. Most people could have walked to work today who live locally. We could but we know best. ''Ahh, it wont be that bad. Government panicking again.'' Kids should be sent to school with credit on phones or at least money to ring home. Schools should have shut early. It's all basic common sense but we all ignore the warnings in some way, then moan about it. Part of being British I suppose.

As for the roads not being treated on time, well that just defies belief. Grit them at dinner and then again at night. Or can't we afford the grit?”

“So why was the Cleethorpe Road flyover closed? Was it because the council didn't grit it? We all knew it was going to snow this afternoon - why didn't the council?”

    “Listen to you whingeing lot
Who think you have it bad!
Hark , I'll tell you how it was
When I were just a lad.

At first we had no weather at all
On account of our penniless state,
Till Elsie, the youngest, found a job
As a gas mantle fitter's mate.

    Even then it was atrocious.
We dare not light the fire
'Twould tell the landlord we'd got cash.
He'd put the rent up higher.

    In bitter chill, conversation was
    The hardest thing to handle.
You spoke to each other face to face
    Across a lighted candle.

    Otherwise, the words you spoke,
Whether to grieve or cheer them,
    Froze solidly upon the lips
    Before anyone could hear them.

I remember one especially cold night,
The kind we used to dread,
When I awoke to find what looked
Like a glass sphere, in the bed.

It had a strange fluorescent glow
    In yellow, brown and green
    Quite unlike any object
    That I had ever seen.

I held it towards the candle
To observe it whole and part.
It started spluttering in the heat
    Giving me quite a start.

Then, quick as a flash, it disappeared
With a loud and rasping sound
    Leaving behind an awful stench
    Which filled the room around.

    Now in my advancing years
    When surveying a wintry scene
I wonder on my magic sphere
And what it could have been.

    Rambling Sid”

“Oh and worried-sick, what was your 14 year old daughter doing in town waiting for a bus if she's a pupil at Toll Bar and aren't there any phone boxes in town?

You present as an unconvincing adlibbing stirrer with too much time on your hands and boredom in your life. Get out more.”

“It's not so much the snow that's the problem, but the lack of common sense. People insist on blocking box junctions, jumping lights and just being in too much of a hurry. Plenty of sirens and blue lights this rush hour. Took me two and a quarter hours to get from Convamore road to Pasture St LC, then round to Ainslie St. Sat at Pasture St/Hainton Ave lights for half an hour, jsut watching people ignore the red lights. Watched a bus at Hainton/Welhome lights block the entire junction so no one could move, then wobble at quite a frightening angle. Boy racers revving their engines, people bibbing the car in front. Be prepared and just chill a bit.”

“The paths around Town Hall Square and the Municipal Offices were gritted either last night, or early this morning, I walked past at 08:00 today.”
