It was described as green and blue in colour.
Humber Coastguard's Matt Atkinson, said: "We received 29 calls in total. People though they were flares for people in distress but we have confirmation that it was something from space."
Tracey Norman from Habrough, spotted it with her family. She said: "It was flying through the air faster than a plane and the colours glowing behind it were green and blue. It headed towards Humberside Airport, then broke up into a ray of colours. We were just gobsmacked."
According to national reports, people across the country saw the meteor.
Meanwhile, locals documented their sighting on Facebook.
Lauren Burdass wrote: "Has just seen some sort of meteor come over our house"
Rumours circulated that it had landed in Immingham but Humberside Police, Humber Coastguard and Humberside Fire and Rescue confirmed they had deployed no accident and emergency services around the borough.
Meanwhile others expressed their disappointment at missing it.
Another Facebooker said: "Wish I had seen this meteor!!"

“It's a pity it didn't crash on to the Ice Factory, that would have solved that problem. lol”

“I saw it at 11pm from my living room window in New Waltham, made the husband get up to see it just in case, I was imagining it. Lasted ages and seemed to be heading towards Old Waltham. Looked like several orange / yellow flashes at the front and then lots and lots of shooting stars following it. Have seen lots of smaller ones over the last few nights too.”

“I was the first to comment on the Grimsby Telegraph website, just a few minutes afterwards. See

But I love the photos because I didn't manage to take one.
This is another shower of Perseid meteors, but much more spectacular than the one we were advised to view in August. According to astronomers, Perseid meteors move at 61 km per second, which is 38 miles per second. Meteors usually become incandescent, i.e. they burn brightly, at an altitude of about 110 km, or 70 miles, but if they are falling, rather than just grazing the edge of the atmosphere, they can continue to burn to as low as 70 km, or 40 miles.
This meteor was visible for getting on for half a minute, in which time it would have travelled many hundreds of miles. When it disappeared it would be a lot further away than Humberside Airport.”
