Moving movie at Louth cinema
AN Iraqi movie – filmed on location in and around Baghdad just a year after the US-led invasion – is to be screened by Louth Film Club.
Ahlaam will be shown at the Playhouse Cinema on Monday.
Released in 2007 but filmed in 2004, Ahlaam is described as impressive for its powerful storytelling and cinematography, despite being made in dangerous conditions.
Its director, Mohamed Al-Daradji, and some of his cast and crew were kidnapped by insurgents (twice in one day) and also detained by US troops who thought they were insurgents.
The film takes its name from one of the three characters whose lives it charts through the transition from Saddam Hussein's dictatorship to the chaos of occupation and insurgence.
Ahlaam, played by Aseel Adel, is a young bride in shock after the violent arrest of her fiancé on their wedding day. Ali (Bashir Al Majid) is a soldier whose hopes for the future are cruelly dashed and Mehdi (Mohamed Hashim) a doctor at the asylum where Ahlaam and Ali have been held.
Ahlaam is Certificate 15 and starts at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £3 for members and normal cinema prices (£5 or £4 concessions) for non-members.
