Louth mum shapes up for 13-mile Great North Run challenge in Newcastle
A LOUTH mum is running the Great North Run to raise money to give disabled children sporting opportunities – after losing three stone in just nine months.
Mum-of-two Lynn Smith, 31, of Harrington Way, will be running the 13-mile Great North Run in Newcastle on Sunday, September 16 – something that would have seemed impossible last year.
Lynn is running for Get Kids Going, a charity which provides specially built sports equipment for disabled children. She was inspired by the Paralympics and relative Harvey Phillips, the brave young meningitis victim who has two prosthetic legs after losing them when he was struck by meningitis.
"Harvey is related to my husband but knowing that the charity helps people like him makes it that much more personal to me and will help me on that final mile," said Lynn.

Morrisons baker Lynn is now a keen runner but would never have considered taking on the 13-mile challenge this time last year when she weighed 17 stone and wore a 22 dress size. In November 2011, she decided to change her life and joined Slimming World with a friend and colleague. "My friend just said to me 'come on, you're fat and need to lose some weight', so I did.
"She was very blunt but we are very good friends and I'm glad that she did," added Lynn.
Now, Lynn weighs around 14 stone and wears a 14-16 dress size thanks to a change in her diet – and her love of running.
Lynn said: "I started running and now I'm absolutely hooked – I've just got back from Turkey and was running in 40°C heat.
"Now it is part of my routine and instead of slobbing out on the sofa, I go for a run."
On September 28, Lynn and husband Martin will celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary and she will be at her lightest since they were married and wears the same dress size she wore when they first met, when Lynn was just 17 years old.
"The best thing is, I have never dieted and actually eat more than I did when I was big – I just eat healthier and exercise more," added Lynn.
