'New pool is no good in the wrong place'

BUS routes from all over the Grimsby area meet at Nuns Corner – the "gateway" to Scartho Pool.

How can a few buses down narrow Dudley Street and Cromwell Road ever serve the new pool so well?

Councillor Jane Hyldon-King says people should get used to using two buses. Some children, use to travelling alone, could well be stopped by parents anxious about bus changing and extra expense.

This would be cruel and against the Olympic spirit of encouraging sport and also cruel and disruptive for the residents of these inadequate roads.

However fantastic the plan, Cromwell Road is the wrong place for a new pool, especially without a high diving board, and perhaps saunas should be left to private gyms.

Far better to keep the Scartho site, even if it means the pool's closure for a year or two for rebuilding or refurbishment.

How can it be right for a few people to ride rough-shod over a whole town? Why are they hell-bent on moving from the Scartho site?

The Grimsby Telegraph has reported that many meetings have been held; where has the money come from to pay for the architects for work already done and why no tenders – is this legal?

A fantastic pool (in the council's opinion), but as stated, it would be no good in the wrong place, out of the area of a large amount of the populous of Grimsby and thus it could be under-used.

“"I wonder if Mrs Hyldon-King actually uses the buses that she so blithely advocates using two of to get to the new pool? I am guessing not! I have 3 children and had to give up the family car after being made redundant 16 months ago, as since then I have only managed to find low paid work and could not afford to keep it. Currently, we go as a family to the swimming pool at Scartho once or twice a month. The kids love it and we can easily get a bus that drops us off just a short walk away from the pool. If the pool is moved to Cromwell Road then these visits will stop, not because we don't want to go, but because the cost of a family of 5 paying fares for 4 bus trips would make us think twice."”

“by Glebe82 said "Here come the conspiracy theories again!!

Glebe I'm suprised you say this, usually I read your comments which usually are pretty constructive and sometimes funny. I think we do have a conspiracy here, I think the deal was done some time ago, thats why people are kicking up a stink about it. It just seems pure arrogance from the council, they do not listen, I use the baths, its packed most days and will have an impact on a lot of people who use the facilities at scartho, ok the new pool wont be outside town, but its not very convenient for most of the people who use the current facilities.

I'm convinced the powers that be have entered into this scheme some time ago, with no consultation. It will all come out in the wash eventually. I also feel sorry for the employees who work at Scartho baths who are always so helpful.

The people who are pationate about keeping scartho pool open are genuine people, some are extremely upset, especially some of the older people. But I don't think this council would listen even if the 7000 who signed the petition marched on the town hall, they are so detached from people, shame really.”

“Living in the area I noticed three curious things happen at the Scartho site in the last year or so, which individually look inconspicuous but together are possibly telling.

First, the cutting through to Eastwood Avenue from the site was closed off.
Then you have the rearrangement of the crossings and traffic lights at the front of the site.
Finally a new path installed at the opposite side of the site leading down to the school.

Seems like things have already been done in preparation for redevelopment.”

“Here come the conspiracy theories again!!

Maybe just maybe it is a case that it will cost too much to refurbish Scartho when compared with the cost of building a more modern facility approximately 3 miles away. The way people talk on here you'd think they were building it in Keelby. Try running or cycling to the new facility, you never know we could end up with an olympic triathlete from the town to make up for all those olympic divers that scartho has produced over the years, that we'll now miss out on.”

“Great idea to move it out of central town onto the flood/marshland outskirts! Then the council can sell the prime land down Scartha Road (and all the land at the back that this would open up) to a property developer and recoup some money in their bank account from years of incompetence. They must think we are stupid! This deal stinks.”
