New stores bring jobs back to area
SCORES of jobs have been created in Grimsby with the opening of two new shops.
The former Woolworths store, on Victoria Street, opened for the first time as fashion chain New Look yesterday.
-

NEW START: Store manager, Laura Wardell, left, with staff from the newly opened New Look store in Victoria Street, Grimsby.
Tomorrow, Virgin Media will open its doors on Friargate Mall, within Freshney Place.
New Look has been trading in Freshney Place for some years in a smaller unit. It is not known what the future of that unit is.
Virgin Media – which sells mobile phones, TV packages and internet connections – used to trade from within the Zavvi music shop, but closed when the national Zavvi chain went into administration late last year.

“Which new jobs are being created? New |Look are moving round the corner and Virgin are re opening and presumably employing the people from Zavvi again. Seems to me no new jobs are being created just half a dozen old ones.”

“Yes, and you'll also be making some poor kid in India work for their money as well.”

“I agree with "Dave Cleethorpes". People are so quick to moan! I think it's great that another chain has opened and used an empty space. It would have probably created quite a few jobs whether their temporary or permanent. In a recession your bloody lucky to find a job if your out of work! Yes there is competition, but isn't that what every business has to cope with, no matter what it is??? I found New Look to have cheaper clothes so prefer to go there rather than somewhere like Binns that are more expensive! Whoop whoop, pay day today so I'll be there making them work for their money! Lol!”

“"Scores of jobs". Would suggest that this is a GT writer trying to make a name for him/herself by bending the facts a bit. Although any new job is welcome.”

“Dave, Cleethorpes - it's that type of attitude that has made the change from well paid jobs in industry and manufacturing to low pay jobs in shops and bars. We need large scale investment from business and government in this area. How VERY sad is it that we should be asked to celebrate the creation of a few jobs. There are no extra jobs, as I can guarantee you that at least 50 people will be made unemployed in the Grimsby area today.
What was once a proud fishing port, and also had many chemical factories, has been decimated to the type of place where a clothes shop moving from one side of the precinct to the other should be a grand occasion,”

“1 new job is better than none, do the people of this area always have to find a negative in a positive? Even if a job is only created for a week it is better to have created it than not.”

“Hate to pour cold water but hasn't anyone noticed that both of these shops are in direct competition to shops already in the area? There simply isn't the money in town to support all of them so unfortunately we are likely to find these "scores of jobs" headlines replaced with "store closure" ones before too long.”
