Newport and Grimsby battled out a fierce goalless draw at Rodney Parade in the Blue Square Bet Premier.
The home side made a strong start to the game but failed to make their chances count in the first half.
Striker Aaron O'Connor nearly put them in front in the 37th minute but Grimsby stopper James McKeown was equal to his 12-yard strike.
Ben Swallow came within an inch of putting Newport in front with just 10 minutes remaining when his shot hit the inside of the post before flying back out again.
