IT'S official – we are the golden coast of England!

Those were the elated words of local In Bloomers as Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Immingham and Caistor all scooped gold awards in this year's East Midlands In Bloom Awards.

For three towns in one county to receive the top awards, plus neighbouring Caistor in Lincolnshire, is rare and is indicative of the hard work carried out by small bands of dedicated volunteers, inspiring communities to get involved and improve where they live in.

Grimsby In Bloom chairman Elaine Atkinson was thrilled with the result and hopes it will show areas outside of North East Lincolnshire what the borough is all about.

She said: "We are all absolutely over the moon. It is going to be brilliant for the local area. People are going to see that three places in the borough have got gold and wonder what we are doing. It will bring people in.

"It will show people that Grimsby has a lot going for it. There are still areas to go at but the areas we have done are up there with the best.

"It is a lovely feeling."

The In Bloomers were competing against more than 50 competitors from across the East Midlands Region and were among just 12 to be awarded gold.

Each town was judged during July on horticultural expertise, the maintenance of the local environment and the involvement of all sectors of the local community.

Both Grimsby and Immingham improved on last year's silver gilt award while Cleethorpes retained its golden title – for the sixth year running – earning it an invite to compete for the national Champion of Champions competition by the Royal Horticultural Society.

Cleethorpes In Bloom chairman, Bob Callison, was 'overwhelmed' at coming top – for the sixth year running.

He said: "It is official – we are the golden coast of England. This is exactly what we were all waiting for and it feels fantastic. Not only does this put Cleethorpes on the map, but with all three of us getting gold, it really puts North East Lincolnshire on there too."

They were honoured at a prestigious award ceremony in Spalding, and while each town's In Bloom team works independently, they are united in the same goal – to make North East Lincolnshire a great place to live in and visit.

Vice-chair for Immingham In Bloom, Dave Jackson, added: "This doesn't just reflect on Immingham, but on North East Lincolnshire as a whole. This shows local people can get involved, look after themselves and the area they live in and make a real difference."

Caistor improved by ten marks, securing top place in the village category with the highest mark of all the competitors.

Chairman Deborah Barker said: "We are absolutely delighted. This year we did more flowers, involved more people and got more businesses on board. It was a great effort by the whole community."
