OUTSPOKEN North East Lincolnshire Council leader Chris Shaw has launched an attack on Hull City Council chief executive Darryl Stephenson. In the midst of a swath of attacks on numerous public figures - details of which appear in tomorrow's Grimsby Telegraph - Councillor Shaw (Lab, Sidney Sussex) accused Mr Stephenson of "bearing a grudge" against the ruling Labour group at the Grimsby-based authority. His comments follow claims made earlier this year by former city council leader Colin Inglis that the four councils bordering the Humber were privately "fighting like rats in a sack" over cross-estuary issues. In particular, Councillor Inglis pointed the finger at Cllr Shaw for putting millions of pounds of Government funding at risk by "displaying shocking megalomania" during negotiations between the four authorities.Firing back, Councillor Shaw claimed Hull had a "huge chip" on its shoulder, adding: "There might have been a time when Hull clicked its fingers and everyone else came running but that doesn't happen anymore."He also claimed Councillor Inglis was merely trying to raise his own profile by making controversial comments, saying the former Lord Mayor was in the "twilight years" of his political career.Since then, council leaders from both sides of the estuary have attempted to play down any further claims of rifts between the neighbouring authorities. But now Councillor Shaw has lit the blue touch paper again by attacking Mr Stephenson, who worked as interim chief executive at North-East Lincs in 2004.He stepped into the temporary post after the council was severely criticised for poor leadership and a lack of financial management in an Audit Commission report.Speaking at a full council meeting, Councillor Shaw was asked by opposition Conservative councillors to congratulate the Government for investing in the region after a number of recent funding announcements. The Labour leader refused to offer any general praise for the coalition but claimed he always got a good response from ministers.Tory group leader Councillor Keith Brookes then asked if he got a good response from city council leader Steve Brady.Councillor Shaw replied: "Yes, I do. The person we don't get a good response from is the ex-chief executive of this authority in 2004 who was brought in from the East Riding."That chief executive came in and still bears a grudge against this Labour administration because we opposed him closing toilets and closing libraries."Mr Stephenson hit back: "Councillor Shaw appears to have engaged mouth before brain again but I wish him well in his particular fantasy land."If he has a problem with me representing the interests of the citizens of Hull I would prefer it if he raised that face-to-face and not via a stab in the back from a distance."I have been fortunate to work with some great leaders – Sir Peter Soulsby, Pat Doyle, Steve Parnaby and now Steve Brady – men of intellect. Unfortunately, my counterpart at Grimsby isn't so blessed."

“People are saying Cllr Shaw is losing the plot .He himself confirmed the concensus on Look North when he talked about a" centrally " located leisure facility on the Scartho Bath's site after demolition .The 9,500 plus petitioners want the Baths refurbished or rebuilt on the existing "centrally" located site on numerous bus routes . The users want the same facilities as at present or more in the case of a rebuild . The new pool proposed by Cllr Burnett will not be "central" to population , consequently underused , another white elephant ! “Who gave GerrySixties 12 reds when he is entirely correct? However, take look at eastern England from the Borders to the Wash. It's standing dead in the water with almost all of it's industries no longer required whilst the southern half of the country remains reasonably prosperous and still attracts investments. Demographically the south ticks all the right boxes and apart from a few northern conurbations also getting a tick or two we are, quite frankly, out of the reckoning so why get excited? A few flying handbags never did anybody much harm. Incidentally, the Humber region, another Whitehall "politburo" invention. Why?”

    “@Heavenly

If at first you don't succeed lose, lose, lose again ;-).

Nobody is interested in your agenda and you represent the opinion of no one except yourself. You are the self-appointed expert in parochial backwaters (your term) but we don't share your myopic view.

Be off with you, back to Scunthorpe and your negative postings.

Incidentally, how did you do in your 11+, you didn't say, and you're certainly more interesting than the message you're pedalling.”

“Well well if debate, freedom of expression, eDemocracy and having a voice isn't alive in kicking in the eyes of some in Grimtown!

So there you have it Northcliffe and this world of main stream and social media eDemocracy forums and the like. According to some; shut it all down, it is clear there is no justification and we're all wasting our time and voices:

“Let's get these 7 comments made between 2.24pm and 8.25pm in perspective. That's 7 comments from 6 different names in 6 hours, or one person per hour from a population of 160,000 in NEL. On the strength of that opinion one such person is calling for a vote of no confidence in Councillor Shaw, hmmmm, oh dear.

Once there was a silly old ram
Thought he'd punch a hole in a dam
No one could make that ram, scram
He kept buttin that dam :-(

So any time your feelin bad
    Stead of feelin sad
    Just remember that ram
And OOPS no one's ever heard of a bursting billion kilowatt dam ;-)"""

Perhaps the ram should try windmills instead.”

“If any more proof was needed of the primitively crude parochialism and pointless, petty vindictive mindset that pervade Humberside's overly divisive politics, local government and communities?!

All of which must, in no small measure, go some way to account for the Humber regions decline and degeneration down the years?!

And surely this all such needless and embarrassing distractions have to be damaging to the Humber's standing and future prospects of regeneration?! IMHO”

“To the Grimsby Labour Party - it is simple you need to have a vote of no confidence in Shaw and have him removed.

I am not so concerned that every time he opens his mouth he damages the Labour Party, but i am concerned that this man is damaging Grimsby and the surrounding area in terms of any Business investment into the region, or Investment from cental Goverment or EU.

This man clearly has no idea, - time to go, and quickly please!”

“Coun. Shaw "also claimed Councillor Inglis was merely trying to raise his own profile by making controversial comments".

The words "pot" and "kettle" spring to mind.”
