D-DAY on a multi-million deal to privatise council services is just weeks away.

Hundreds of North East Lincolnshire Council staff have received a letter telling them their jobs could soon be transferred to one of two rival companies aiming to takeover council services.

The two firms are Balfour Beatty and Mouchel.

Councillors will decide next month which one of the firms will be responsible in future for services, which could include highways and transport, planning, economic development, urban regeneration, estates management and building control.

Final offers have yet to be received from the two firms to take over the services.

They will be received at the end of this month and a decision made by cabinet members in February. The new contract is due to start in April.

NELC chief executive Tony Hunter wrote to all staff whose jobs may be included in the services taken over.

He said the move was aimed at improving the council's performance and providing better services to residents.

He reassured employees potentially transferring to the new employers, that their rights and pensions would be protected.

Mr Hunter said the talks were still commercially-sensitive so information given to staff was limited.

    “NELC emp GY

Why not go and get a job in the private sector for 10K - 15K more then......it might just be an eye opener as to why the private sector earn more that if you want to work of course !”

    “I agree Jo,

even our ITC have guaranteed a handsome superannuation burden for the tax payers of Immingham. Just look at the ITC accounts and wince at how much we have to pay in to their pension(s). They use the law to make me pay into one of the highest paid town clerks pension pots......nice one ITC, and you have the cheek to say you have saved us money this year.

The ITC managed for nearly 18 months without a town clerk....why did they choose to waste our money employing a local government highly paid superannuated fat cat? EVERY other parish can manage with a part time clerk and no mayor or civic centre. Immingham town council saves us money? As much as I and others voted to get rid of the money wasting ITC at least they didn't manage to co-opt sympathisers following the resignation debacle! Lets hope the independents are truly independent and look at real savings.....mayor, civic centre, and artificial jobs for the boys. We can only look back in horror at what damage the labour ITC led council have done over decades-costing us millions of pounds. Look around at the fruits of the ITC, dereliction and black hole money wasting on so called free schemes.

The labour leaflet was a joke, every independent leaflet promises some hope and sense for the future.

Take a long second look at labour failure and take a long hard look at independents!

Why should every council tax payer in Immingham pay into a fat cat pension fund for one of the most highly paid individuals in our town.......it stinks and insults hard pressed people who could only dream of such subsidies to their own pay and perks.

I never got near to an answer of why our free community coach in addition to the lease cost, attracted a £3 500 a year maintenance cost....something very fishy about that!

Oh and that £1 000 water bill allowance for the war memorial....creative accountancy gone mad.

Come on Independents, save Immingham another £100 000 by demolishing the civic centre and around another £80 000 by dismantling the jobs for the boys club......and achieve parity with EVERY OTHER SENSIBLE PARISH IN N. E. Linc's.

Perhaps given sensible policies by independents, the ITC might regain some of the 1 755 votes that went for abolition, the result thrown in our faces by the ITC.

No body can look into the future, but we can all see the historical blight of Immingham by the profligate ITC.”

“Josephine White - I work for the council, I pay council tax, I also contribute to my pension. Why should I be punsihed because I got a job in my chosen field and contribute my own money - and my taxes - into that scheme? Just because you can not afford a pension, do not begrudge those that sacrifice other things so that they can.”

“josephine white, you certainly aimed a lot of anger towards Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) and ended up telling me "The country simply can't afford people like you anymore".

Some of the figures you have quoted I know are widely incorrect. Like....

"The TPA estimates that at the moment, for every £5 the British taxpayer hands over in council tax, £1 goes towards your pension. That figure could double and treble in just a few years."

The actual figure from Council Tax is less than 5%. So to put it in your terms that's less than £1 for every £20.

Far from being 'gold-plated' the average pension in payment from the LGPS is around £4,000 a year, for women the average is £2,600. So I hardly believe you'll see many of us retiring to the Bahamas.

Having said that The LGPS has a positive cash flow, with income from investments and contributions exceeding expenditure on benefits by £4-5billion every year.

So if the Government is telling you it's running it at a deficit where is the excess money going??? MP expense's?

As far as not being able to afford me, the equivalent of my job in the private sector brings an additional £10-15k a year on average. So if you were to privatise my job it's definately going to cost you more.

So the first £5,000 of my pension won't come from you and your husband. However, I presume as your husband cannot organise his finances well enough to put something aside for a pension he will rely on the state pension, which I do contribute too. So when he's withdrawing his state pension give a thought to me and my contributions won't you.”

“The article is in fact an old one !! If posters had read the dates they would have noticed this.
I know the council are fond of looking backward but even they cannot make a decision in February when it is already March 10th. The final figures are obviously not in yet and already the council are making bold statements about April (perhaps with April Fools day in mind). I do hope it is not another Capita fiasco, though I suspect it will be. It will doubtless cost us dear when the whole deal turns sour.
Whatever the decision, based on past experience it will be the wrong one and once more no manager will lose their job over it.
The way to cut costs whilst preserving services is to cut highly paid managers, diversity officers, cultural inclusion officers, events managers, number crunchers, staple counters and bean stealers - NOT low paid bin men and street cleaners.”

“NELC employer wrote: "while the pensions are one of the best around they are hardly 'gold plated' for the vast majority of staff".

Well, for ordinary workers uncoddled by the State, think of them as lead plated, because they'll be weighing the rest of us down for decades to come.

According to figures recently released by the Taxpayers Alliance, for the year 2007/8 NELC council was running a public sector pensions deficit of -£87,355. This year, however, that deficit has soared to -£138,000 .. that's an increase of over £50,000 in just one year! And it will carry on going up and up and up and up ....

The TPA estimates that at the moment, for every £5 the British taxpayer hands over in council tax, £1 goes towards *your* pension. That figure could double and treble in just a few years. (The National pensions deficit stands at a stonking £53 Billion!).
It's a financial time bomb waiting to go off.

So 'NELC employer - when you do eventually draw your pension 'gold plated' or not - remember that the first £5000 or so, was courtesy of me and my husband, okay? (who incidentally, can't afford a pension of his own)

Stop trying to defend the indefensible. The country simply can't afford people like you anymore .. full stop.”

“Thanks to the greedy and incompetent bankers the public sector will have to pay for their failings by losing their jobs, while the bankers pick up huge bonuses for bringing the country to its knees. De Freitas obviously thinks that he will be leading the council following the election and wants to get someone else to do the firing and not worry about how much it will cost the rest of us over the years for an inferior service. I feel very sorry for the hard pressed and capable public sector workers and no I am not one and consider myself to be fortunate in that respect.”
