And anyone who doubts animals have feelings would quickly change their mind after watching the pair bask in the sun together side-by-side – despite being separated by a mesh wire fence.

Owner of the Jungle Zoo on the Lakeside near the Boating Lake, Sharon Gledhill, said: "They are just besotted with each other. It is a very unlikely friendship, they are completely different species for a start and would never come across each other in the wild but it is lovely to see – as well as being highly amusing and very, very cute!"

The pair met each other after Rhino – a 10kg Rhino Iguana – took a stroll around the zoo to enjoy the hot weather.

It was love at first sight and after in inquisitive sniff, Rhino and PD, a Kune Kune pig their friendship was sealed and they spent six hours chatting and sunbathing together.

Sharon believes animals are capable of having friendships and emotions like humans.

She continued: "Pigs are so clever and it is lovely for the pair of them to have a bit of companionship. Rhino is much more than just a reptile, he loves attention whether that is from PD or people. It is great for him to have the interaction.

"Everyone is fascinated by their friendship. They love seeing them together and watching PD wander over to Rhino and lie down next to each other."

Unfortunately the buddies cannot hang out together everyday because Rhino, native to the Caribbean, can only come out and about when it is warm enough.

The friends are two of many species living at the Jungle Zoo which was taken over by Sharon and her husband, Craig three years ago.

Since taking it over they have pledged their commitment to conservation and have plans to build more enclosures and bring in more animals.

But any developments will not affect PD and Rhino's friendship, which looks set to last a long time.

Sharon added: "As long as it is warm enough Rhino will be free to walk around the zoo and visit PD.

So for the pair, it looks as long as the sun is shining they will have no worries for the rest of their days... Hakuna Matata!

“I am so please that perhaps Rhino the iguana has found love. My granddaughter has 'adopted' Rhino, for which she used her birthday present money and I know she will be thrilled
They do a wonderful job at the Jungle Zoo, the owners Craig and Sharon are really caring and I know running the zoo is a labour of love for them.”
