IAN Wiseman had no sentiment for family loyalties when he was a winner in this summer's first Invitation Day at Grimsby Golf Club.

Older brother Ian and his guest from Elsham, David Crane, came tops in the second of two competitions in one day.

It left Martin Wiseman and his partner from Louth, Steve White, to settle for the runners-up position.

Both the Wisemans are members art the Littlecoates Road club.

Wiseman and Crane won with 45 points, the highest score over both competitions, ahead of Wiseman and White with 43.

The two-competition format was tried for the first time last year and went down extremely well.

A shotgun start at 8.30am was followed by a presentation in the clubhouse – with another shotgun start at 2.30pm.

Conditions for both competitions were favourable with the course playing extremely well and the sun shining, only a slight breeze to keep the players cool.

The afternoon competition was very competitive, a number of teams exceeding the 40-points mark playing a betterball pairs off three-quarters handicap.

Third with 42 was Clive Jenkins with his Elsham guest Ian Neve.

A countback was required to determine fourth place after three teams carded 41 but club chairman Mike Beckett with his Cleethorpes guest John Croy edged in.

The longest drive was on the 17th by Grimsby member Chris Greenbeck while nearest the pin on the 2nd was Simon Mackenzie, 70ins from the cup.

Earlier in the day, the tournament was just as close, the top three teams all ending up with 44.

Third on countabck was Graham Taylor with his guest Colin Dale and second were were Nick Cutsforth and his guest from Immingham, Mick Gibson.

The winners were Craig Smith and his guest from Louth, Eric Turner, who won with a better back six. Smith plays off a handicap and 12 and Turner off 13.

They both lost three shots due to the format being three-quarters of handicap, which makes the scoring of 44 points proficient indeed by all three winning teams.

Longest drive was on the 17th was by Grimsby's Mike Watson and nearest the pin on the 2nd was Cutsforth at 26in.

Club captain John Tinker made the presentations.

The annual mixed open competition at Grimsby for the Edgar Lee Trophy attracted visitors from 13 different clubs.

Third were Grimsby members Paul and Alison Doughty, who carded net 66.

Second with the same total, but a better back nine, were women's captain Marion Mackenzie and club captain John Tinker. The winners with net 65 was Easingwold couple Judy and Gerald Clark.
