Olympic Flame: Residents urged to turn out in force to cheer on torchbearers in our area

PEOPLE are being urged to turn out in force to cheer on our Olympic torchbearers.

The countdown to the London 2012 Games is well underway, as the Flame, lit at Temple of Hera in Ancient Olympia this week, makes its way to Britain.

The 70-day relay prior to the Games will begin at Land’s End on May 19, where three-time Olympic gold medallist Ben Ainslie will be the first of 8,000 torchbearers as it visits towns and cities throughout the country.

It will arrive in North East Lincolnshire on Tuesday, June 26, and leaves the day after, as reported, showcasing the borough’s landmarks, businesses and attractions.

The Flame will abseil the Dock Tower in Grimsby, and will also travel by train on the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway during its time here, before moving to neighbouring counties.

The Grimsby Telegraph has been featuring stories of some of the many torchbearers, and more will be published soon.

The Olympic Flame will pass through the borough on Tuesday, June 26:

Arriving in Immingham (Pelham Road) at 4.41pm.

Leaving Immingham (King’s Road) at 5.28pm.

Arriving in Grimsby (Cleethorpe Road/Riby Square) at 5.38pm.

Arriving Cleethorpes (Isaacs Hill) at 6.10pm.

Arriving Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway at 6.29pm.

Arriving at Meridian Park Showground for the evening celebration event.

And on Wednesday, June 27:

Abseil the Dock Tower at 6.14am (public access to Grimsby Docks is not permitted).

Arriving at Fredrick Ward Way at 6.43am.

Arriving at Victoria Street West at 6.47am.

Passing Nun’s Corner at 7am.

Leaving North East Lincolnshire via Louth Road at 7.29am.

    To echo Des' sentiment, I wish the torchbearers all the best, but the incessant bleating of the fat controller and his puppet rag is just to much for me.

    “If your in Immingham, come up to st Andrews Church, we are on the route and will be open from 3.30 till after the torch has passed, we will have refreshments, stalls and a loo, and a great spot for watching. Crafts and activities for the kids as well.”
