It is a return to his roots for Steve, who worked at Surfleets butchers, in Alexandra Road, Grimsby, when he left school at 15.

He said: "The butchers is next to The Icing Cabin and I always said to Graham that he should give me first refusal if he wanted to sell.

"He retired at the end of November and things have been going really well for us.

"We've kept all eight members of staff and employed another person, too.

"Swales has a great reputation so we plan to keep the name and continue serving old customers the quality meat they expect, as well as welcoming new ones."

It is not the first time Steve has saved a business from potential closure. In 2007, when Smith's bakeries went into liquidation, he took on the premises in Waltham Road and Grimsby's Top Town Market, saving them from closure.

He now plans to extend the range of services on offer at Swales, which stocks quality meat from Lincolnshire producers such as Brown's, at Lincoln, and Ken Briggs, at Market Rasen.

He added: "We hope to start selling our meat wholesale to local cafés and restaurants in the near future."

Steve runs The Icing Cabin with wife Lisa and son Lewis, 19.

Lisa said: "People keep joking that we've got the butcher and the baker, now we just need the candlestick maker! We'll have to see if we can persuade our youngest son to go into that!

"We were a bit nervous before we took over Swales but it's been absolutely fantastic so far and the reaction from customers has been brilliant.

"We're really looking forward to the future."

Swales and The Icing Cabin are open Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays.
