Pay workers at cafes
I AM writing to recommend this particular branch of Tukes Cafes.
Colette their manager is empathic and runs a very, very busy tight ship.
These adults have additional needs yet work their socks of, from Mark who takes your order efficiently and quickly to Andrew the gentle smiling giant with a wicked sense of humour. All the other workers are excellent too.
I hope something is being done to pay these young people.

While work experience is developing social skills, literacy, numeracy etc, it is a very hard job and, although on benefits they should be able to get the £15-20 top-up they are allowed to earn.
This would give them a feeling of being valued as well as the luxury of being able to take their girlfriends/partners to the cinema or buy a cd. The food is cheap and excellent with little or no margin for profit., but I would gladly have a small increase in price to cover this minimal cost and it would be accountable against tax returns.
Great cheap food with great friendly workers – now play fair and pay them.

“The original article referred to Freeman St. The staff are very very busy here. I am not asking for minimum wage but a top up. Being valued is important to self worth and whilst certificates and praise is great a small top up would be great and give a little more freedom. A young woman recently went to court and won for being asked to work for experience only with no payment. This should apply all round.”

“I never said everyone would and I agree within reason it is good to have volunteer schemes I was just making the point that a lot of people would snap up the chance for work but far too many people rely on volunteers as free labour!”

“So are you 100% sure that because they have special needs they get more in benefit than anyone else. I would do your homework if I were you. Also it is not just about how much money people get or don't get, it is about building confidence and learning life skills. I think voluntary work is a good thing, sure some companies probably take advantage but that is then up to the government who put these schemes in place to monitor them properly.Perhaps giving them a job when trained allowing them to pass on their skills and train others.Young people with special needs are certainly special people and when they do a job they put their heart and soul into their work, unlike others.Do you think if these jobs, voluntary at that, would be snapped up by some of the regulars who collect their money-for-nothing pay checks from the job centre each week.I think not”

“As much as I know this is going to be an unpopular stance, they shouldn't even have the volunteers taking so many places! If they have special need they get paid a lot more in benefits than anyone else. With the top ups they are probably better off, money wise, than people who can only find part time work and the sad fact is that all these spaces are being taken up when millions of people are out of work and can't find any work round here! Like the new community centre that has created 100 jobs-none of them are paid work. I just think people need to concentrate more on employment rather than volunteering.”
