A WOMAN has died after she was hit by a car overtaking another at a busy junction in Grimsby.

The incident happened at the junction of Convamore Road and Eleanor Street at about 11am yesterday, as reported on www.thisisgrimsby.co.uk.

Witnesses said a blue BMW overtook a navy Mercedes Jeep once the lights had changed on Convamore Road.

They saw two women crossing the road together and had nearly reached the opposite side when the BMW appeared.

One woman jumped out of the way, but the other was hit by the vehicle, and died later in hospital. She is understood to be aged in her 40s.

Police attended the scene soon after and cordoned off the road to carry out investigations. A man, believed to be aged in his 30s, was arrested at the scene.

Dan Hewson, the driver of the Mercedes Jeep, told how he saw the woman being thrown up into the air before landing back on the road.

"My girlfriend and children were in the car at the time," he said. "We were heading to the Children's Centre, on Edward Street.

"As the lights turned to green at the junction, the BMW overtook me. But there were two pedestrians in the road.

"It was awful to see. We were all shook up and I am still in shock now."

Harold Capes, was driving behind the BMW at the time of the incident in his Nissan Almera.

"The woman went straight up into the air and back down again. It was horrific."

Another witness, who did not wished to be named, was walking along Convamore Road with her children.

She said: "I screamed when I saw it, and it was very upsetting for my children.

"We were about to cross the same road just seconds before the collision; it could have been any of us."

Inspector Mark Hughes, of Humberside Police, who attended the scene, said: "There was a collision between a BMW car and a female pedestrian.

"The woman was taken to Grimsby's Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital by ambulance with serious injuries."

A police spokesman went on to confirm that the woman had died yesterday afternoon.

At the time of going to press, the man arrested remained in police custody. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police on 101.
