Pier owner removes bird netting after shocked girl complains
NETTING hanging underneath the iconic Cleethorpes Pier is to be removed following complaints about birds becoming trapped there.
The alarm was raised by grandad Norman Jennings, of Grimsby Road, Humberston, and his granddaughter Olivia Thomas, 9, after they were left shocked by the number of pigeons struggling to free themselves.

Their innocent shell collecting trip along the beach on Sunday took a gruesome turn when they headed under the Pier only to find the four pigeons – along with eight birds that had died before they were able to escape the thick netting.
Olivia was so distressed by what she saw, she wrote to the police asking for the netting to be taken down and contacted the Grimsby Telegraph.Mr Jennings also said he had contacted North East Lincolnshire Council and the RSPCA – who today said the owner had pledged to remove the netting.
At the time of going to press Bryn Illsley, who owns the Pier was not available for comment.
