MULTI-MILLION pound investment is needed to realise ambitious plans to turn Freeman Street into a focal point for Grimsby for the next 100 years.

Proposals to turn the historic street into an "urban village" with lasting appeal have been announced.

A regeneration partnership has been formed between North East Lincolnshire Council, Shoreline Housing and the Enrolled Freeman of Grimsby – the main landowners of the area.

This picture was taken about a century ago from Garibaldi Street, looking towards the Corporation Arms (to the left in the background), on the corner of Freeman Street and Nelson Street.

The partners will work together to attract multi-million pound investment to completely revamp the area with a view to the changes lasting 100 years.

Nick Kealey, of EC Harris shared their findings at a meeting of business leaders, councillors and partners at the Kills Centre, Freeman Street Market on Friday.

Ideas to make Freeman Street a street for the future include:

Green public open spaces.

Upgrading Grimsby Docks railway station to make it more used.

Improvements to the Central Hall to become a focal part of the street.

More affordable housing to form a community feel.

A new community health facility.

New businesses.

Improving the market.

Better shopping.

Better cycle routes and pedestrian routes.

Restructuring access points and changing priorities long the street.

Stephen White, chairman of the Enrolled Freeman of Grimsby, said: "The Freeman Street of tomorrow will be a dramatically different place to that of today."

“This is identical to the artical and false promises printed in the telegraph january 1996, when the area was granted a substantial amount of EU funding. The only 'Improvement' which materialised from that funding was the councils Kent Street rescource center. What it needs is for the Freeman to substantially reduce the ground rent on leased properties, which is what the council does for small businesses whom pay non-domestic rates. Small businesses do not stand a chance when every official body is trying to bleed money from them.”

“Freeman Street is dead, dead ,dead. Why throw more good money after bad ?
It is disgusting, derelict and populated by the worst examples of society. Knock the whole lot down, build some decent houses with green spaces and a parade of 20 or so shops at the Hainton Square end.
If the Freemen don't like the idea, block off the street at Hainton and Riby squares, build a 10 foot wall around the whole decaying mess and leave them to it.”

“We could build a Freeman Street version of Butlins.

Tourists could stay in the flats for the week and experience the thrillling night time shows and attractions.

Screaming smackheads shrieking at their emaciated kids. Watch as this weeks father balances two kids, three staffies and eight cans of cheap lager as he staggers back form the offie.

Children could play 'Hunt the Syringe ' in the local parks, before visiting the petting zoo (waiting room of the Blue Cross)

A visitors centre could entertain tourists with the Freeman St experience. Stick a dirty needle in you, before taking your kids into care and leaving you on the game with a boyfriend and two staffies to support.

Statues of Podgy Hunt and Siddy Barr could adorn the tree lined plaza.
The re development wouldn't be complete without the huge mural depicting the decline of a once great area.
As someone who was raised down Freemo, I can't begin to tell the current sum who infest the area how much I and many others hate them!!!!!”

“The Conservatives cannot win NELC control on multi-member wards. Multi-member wards mean Labour control, except when they are out of favour and only the LibDems can take their seats. These plans are nothing to do councillors of any party. They are the work of officials. The plans are also the latest in a long list: Branding, Town Centre Masterplan, etc. None of these plans have any credibility. Their sole purpose is to make Grimsby 'Great' and to denude Cleethorpes of its assets, services, and civic identity. If democracy is alive and well it is not living in North East Lincolnshire.”

“Why do the council insist on using tax payer money to regenerate property that is in the main owned privately...

Quote "Enrolled Freeman of Grimsby ¿ the main landowners of the area."

Why not knock down the dangerous properties, then leave it to private investors?
If Freeman street could effectively make money and have a future investors would already be lining up.

Sack the planners, simply for wasting time and money.”

“So much for the words LIBERAL and DEMOCRAT! Surely nether of these words have been used in this case? Perhaps DEMOCRACY will win and the LIBERAL use of a bulldozer can sort out this perennial problem. Hopefully, the new Conservative Authority that will surely come to power in May will see sense and deal with this once and for all!!”

“Where our local government get these crackpot completely a waste of money ideas, defeats me. Whatever money or improvement they do will be rendered unusable and unsightly by the tenacious criminal element who live in the area. It is and has been for a long time gradually becoming an area decent people stay away from, unless you have to go there for some valid reason. It has been difficult for decent people and traders to live and work in the area for a long time. Now ,the money spent on upgrading the top town centre area and cleethorpes sea front, especially North Promenade, would probably be more sensible and money well used, but not Freemo. It is similar to the mistakes made on the Dome in London, it will consume huge amounts of capital to no avail, never be appreciated and little used. It is well said, Freeman Street, RIP.”

“The reason that Freeman Street is "dead" is the fact that retail stores are now the main focal point for anyone who needs to purchase anything. If you need a washing machine you don't think of going to Freeman Street, you will go to a big retailer like Curry's, Argos or Tesco.

Freeman street will never live again because there is no room for small business's here.”
