Plan to up speed limit on Peaks Parkway
THE speed limit along Grimsby's Peaks Parkway could be increased following a borough wide review of speed on main roads.
The proposal to up the limit from 30mph to 40mph follows a traffic survey in the area, which discovered more than 85 per cent of drivers regularly break the speed limit when using the road – with the majority travelling at an average speed of at least 35 mph.

The speed limit on the part of Peaks Parkway between the B&Q junction and the south side of Weelsby Road could be increased from 30mph to 40mph.
The limit could soon be imposed on the stretch from the B&Q superstore to the south side of the Weelsby Road junction.
Coun Martin Vickers, the former portfolio holder for the environment, described the proposal as a "sensible move", saying it was in line with new Government guidelines.
He said: "The Government guidelines are to set speed limits which take into account the actual speed of motorists."
Other arguments for the increase laid out in the report include:
There is no footpath – and therefore no pedestrians.
Notices are posted at strategic locations to inform pedestrians of safe access points at intersecting junctions.
Alternative parallel routes exist that accommodate pedestrians more safely.
A brick wall runs along the length of both sides of the urban section of the road, preventing pedestrians gaining access, and shielding residential properties.
However, Humberside Police casualty reduction officer Pc John Mallett said he was worried that if the limit was increased, drivers would simply continue to break the limit – and drive even faster.
He said: "I have a number of concerns regarding these proposals. The junction of Peaks Parkway and Weelsby Road is a collision cluster site and increased permitted speed may cause an increase in the number of collisions and the severity of injuries involved."
He added that he feared some drivers would hit speeds of up to 50mph, something he said was "inappropriate in the urban environment."
He added: "The Peaks Parkway tends to be self-regulating, due to the traffic light controlled junctions.
"The majority of collisions are at these junctions and I would reconsider whether an increased speed limit is appropriate or indeed necessary.
"We must work closely with NELC to fully evaluate the potential impact of any changes before decisions are finalised."

“I don't drive, so I don't know what frustrations drivers experience regarding speed limits in town, but I always smile to myself whilst being driven down Peakes Parkway because I've often wondered whether it's just coincidence that it leads almost straight from the Council offices in the centre of town to the leafy suburbs where most of our Council big-wigs live. It could almost have been especially built with them in mind!
Perhaps that's why they want to up the speed limit, Lets be fair after all - all those very expensive gas-guzzlers discretely hidden behind the Council Offices all day do need a good run after being parked up all day !”

“Someone has already mentioned the fact that the actual raod lanes merging into 1 is ridiculous.how many times have we had bad drivers squeezing AND overtaking on the inside lane...That is something nobody should do.....but the road is designed to have 2 lanes going straight....how stupid is that!Too many aggressive drivers on all roads today..and NOBODY wants to give way..and this is regardless of speed limits.Not many people stick to the correct limits anyway!!!!
If there is going to be an increase in the speed limit.....then lets hope there will be no increase in accidents along there!!”

“i live along side this main road but to say that if enough people break the law often enough the council will up the speed limit what a load of stupid rubbish i see cars on this road every day racing each other some times up to 50 plus mph also only last month a car trying to beat an artic tanker that ended up in an accident just above the subway on patrick street keep the limit at 30 common sense”

Please read my 11-36 post again.
If there are NO signs, and there ARE street lights, then the 30mph (or lower) applies, and if one does drive over that limit, then yes, you can "be done for exceeding the speed limit."
Speed limit signs are not always mandatory.

“If they just got the sequence of lights to coincide with 30mph it would be a benefit. as for the lane merging which moron designed that.
A 3 lane road with tidal flow morning and night and redesign the junction at victoria street the problem would be sorted.”

“The biggest problem on this stretch of road is the ridiculous lane merging. Its when road rage takes over, and people start racing the car alongside, forcing each other to back down. Its the 'im not backing down' mentality. Speed will always be a factor, but these lane mergers cause people to go faster.”
