A NOTORIOUS accident blackspot in Grimsby could soon be replaced by traffic lights.

Proposals have been put forward to replace the mini-roundabout at the busy junction of Cambridge Road and Littlecoates Road.

A traffic order will be published in the Grimsby Telegraph to invite residents and motorists to have their say on the plans.

A pedestrian crossing on Littlecoates Road will also be upgraded to improve safety and plans have been put forward to create a further lane of traffic, using a strip of land from the amenity area on the west side of the roundabout.

Stuart Greaves, North East Lincolnshire Council's network manager, said there was no room to improve the roundabout because of its limited capacity.

"It is impossible to replace," he said.

Coun Martin Vickers added: "Taking some of the land off the green area would create an extra lane for traffic travelling towards Toothill. There are long tailbacks along Littlecoates Road all the way to Bradley crossroads at peak times."

He recommended the proposal should be included in the Local Transport Plan to bid for Government funding, which will be put forward later this year, as reported.

“I too use this roundabout everyday, and it makes me laugh to see people sitting there staring at each other instead of getting on with it! How hard is it? Give way to your right...if it's clear...go!!!!!!!!! Don't just sit there like a muppet.”

“The road isn't unsafe, it's the standard of driving once again - a combination of belligerent drivers continuing as if the roundabout doesn't exist (particularly when approaching from Toothill) and people not bothering to indicate. Lights won't solve this, the same idiots will simply jump them just as they do now at Westward Ho/Bargate and Welholme Road/Bargate. The traffic is bad from all directions and increased when work was done on Laceby Road/Bradley roundabout. Maybe sort that out and put lights at Nuns' Corner (where there is space) then the traffic on Cambridge Road will be reduced. EDUCATE DRIVERS AND FINE THOSE WHO DON'T COMPLY WITH THE HIGHWAY CODE.”

“That's not an accident blackspot, there's the odd minor bump here and there due to poor driving but, touch wood, there hasn't been a serious injury road traffic accident there for at least 8 years.”

“Not so many years ago, the junction was controlled by traffic lights. The council removed them we were told to improve safety and traffic flow.
One has to consider the removal of the lights in the first place to be a total waste of money.
when will they fire the muppet responsible for these stupid decisions, and replace him with a trained monkey.”
