KEEP bogus callers out of your home – and out of the borough.

That's the message from Humberside Police today as officers launch Operation Liberal – a new initiative to clamp down on those sneaking or tricking their way into the houses of vulnerable and elderly people in order to steal from them.

Reports of two men in a red van, falsely claiming to be carrying out repairs for Shoreline Housing Partnership, in Ripon Street, on Grimsby's West Marsh.

The aim is for neighbouring forces to share information about scams in their region, so that police can warn residents to be on their guard and the criminals do not find easy pickings awaiting them if they head for our streets.

But householders are also being asked to do their bit, by sticking to the adage "if in doubt – keep them out".

Superintendent Phil Walker of Humberside Police, who sits on the national ACPO burglary working group, said: "Distraction burglars are active nationally and up and down the country, elderly residents are being targeted by these people and all too often they are tricking their way into homes to steal.

"There are some straightforward steps that people can take to ensure these offenders do not get allowed access to their homes, but, ultimately, the message is 'Not sure? Don't open the door'."

Officers said one thing to look out for was any caller claiming to be from the gas, electricity or water board – a now defunct term that genuine utility firm workers would not use.

Superintendent Walker has also called on relatives and neighbours to do their bit, too.

He said: "There is also a responsibility for family, friends and neighbours to be vigilant and keep their eyes and ears open to help keep the more vulnerable members of our society safe.

"I want anyone who sees or hears of people calling at addresses, acting suspiciously, trying to gain access to properties while purporting to be from a utility company, to report it to police as a matter of urgency."

Do your bit:

If you have answered the door to a suspicious caller, or believe con artists are operating in your area, don't let them into your home. Lock the door and call Humberside Police on 101.

Alternatively, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
