THE fight against night-time crime in Scunthorpe is being helped by the work of the special constabulary's volunteer police officers.

In a recent operation that saw a number of pubs searched for drugs in North Lincolnshire, 80 per cent of the specials on duty that night were used.

Police and crime commissioner Matthew Grove has made it one of his key objectives to attract more specials into the force - something licensing officer Lisa Vines said would be welcomed.

She said: "The use of volunteers shows the strength of feeling to want to help, which is very positive.

“More political spin to try and hide the fact that cuts are too deep, too fast and effecting all services ! it comes to something when fully trained officers with years of experience are being replaced by specials who are part time and not as well trained. Never doubt their commitment though, they do a fine job, but the simple fact is they are not their 24hrs a day, do not have the training and are not able to provide full commitment to provide the public what they need Mr Grove, how about you stand up to your party and tell them how you really see it !”
