Pony found dead in road on A18

A PONY died in a freak accident on the A18 today.

Humberside Police set up diversions following the escape of the pony from a moving trailer.

It is understood to have been travelling northbound towards Immingham where the owner of the pony lives.

At around 10.30am the pony leapt from the double-compartment trailer and landed on the busy road.

It was believed to have been struck by a following vehicle.

The A18 near Beelsby was closed for more than an hour as the animal was checked by a vet and later removed.

A spokesman for Rase Vets in Market Rasen said: "It is a freak accident. It was going to a new home."To achieve what it did it must have turned around in the trailer."

He added: "It is a tragic set of circumstances. A lot of people were saddened by what happened and we send our sympathies to the owner for their loss.

"Motorists faced diversions around the Beelsby area of the A18.A Humberside Police spokeswoman confirmed the animal was pronounced dead on the road.

She declined to release any further details.
