CLEETHORPES Discovery Centre is taking the art scene to a new level as more and more artists book exhibitions in the increasingly popular venue.

Two new exhibitions opened at the centre on Wednesday, and this is just the start – with the centre now receiving more interest than ever before.

But as well as showcasing local talent, it is also doing its bit for Artlandish, funding some of the charity's community work.

Amy Wood, Artlandish's finance and general manager, said that the exhibition space was becoming evermore popular and funds raised from exhibitions were used to bring confidence to young, elderly, and vulnerable people through art.

She added: "It has continued to grow over the last three years, since we moved here from Cleethorpe Road.

"People wander in and out to see the exhibitions and artists are starting to realise the exposure they get here.

"We are carving a reputation for ourselves and artists keep coming back."

One of the exhibitions, which opened on Wednesday, was Vortex, by 20-year-old Joseph Marritt, of Lord Street.

It is the second time he has exhibited at the centre and his current collection, which he describes as "a new art form", consists of locally-taken pictures which have been digitally edited to create something totally original.

He said: "I have had quite a lot of interest about it already and plenty of people will get to see them here at the Discovery Centre.

"It is not as big as one of the city galleries but it is a really good place to start and show people your work."

The upstairs exhibition, Abstract Works by John Martin, features paintings and drawings with wild colours and unworldly images, some on sale for more than £500.

Mr Martin is a Scunthorpe artist who chose to show his work in Cleethorpes after hearing about Artlandish's work in the community.

He said: "I first heard of the Discovery Centre because of the work that Artlandish does with art in the community, which I think is an excellent idea.

"Then, last year, I came to Cleethorpes because a friend of mine recommended that I come in and see an exhibition.

"I loved the light and the space, and how it is right next to the Boating Lake, so I got in touch and decided I should have my own exhibition here.

"The feedback I have had tonight has been very encouraging so far."

Works from both of the artists are on show throughout February.
