TIME for a spring clean!

Following the success of last year's Big Tidy Up campaign, the Grimsby In Bloom team is once again waging war on litter and graffiti in our town.

Last November Grimsby In Bloom chairman Ernie Brown, secretary Jacquie Brown, ward councillors, community wardens and local residents embarked on a mission to tidy up their neighbourhoods.

Council leader Andrew De Freitas (front right) gets ready to tidy with Grimsby In Bloom chairman Ernie Brown, (back, fourth from left), secretary Jacquie Brown (front right) along with community wardens and In Bloom committee members.

Such was its success, that, throughout March, they will be taking to the streets once again with their litter-pickers, bin bags and sponges in hand.

And they want YOU to help make a difference to your neighbourhood.

The programme starts with the East Marsh and West Marsh wards on Saturday.

This will be followed by:

Saturday, March 13: Freshney and Yarborough.

Saturday, March 20: Heneage and Park.

Saturday, March 27: South and Scartho.

Jacquie Brown, secretary of Grimsby In Bloom, said: "Grimsby In Bloom is not just about flowers, it's also about the community being pro-active in cleaning up their area.

"The first Big Tidy Up in November was brilliant. We had 99 volunteers and we collected 176 sacks of rubbish. Everyone enjoyed themselves.

"We would like even more people to come along this time, to help make a difference to the area where they live."

The campaign is being supported by North East Lincolnshire Council, which is providing manpower in the form of community wardens and equipment.

Council leader Andrew De Freitas said: "The council fully supports this project and we are very happy to be working together with Grimsby In Bloom. I think it is great to get the community involved in this way."

Senior warden Tony Burman said: "I think the Big Tidy Up is a great scheme. It has given the community ownership of their area, and with their help we can really make a difference."

Get involved

Volunteers for this Saturday's East Marsh Big Tidy Up are meeting at St John and St Stephen's Church on the corner of Roberts Street and Rutland Street at 10am. The meeting point for the West Marsh tidy up is MAAG Hall on Haycroft Street at 1pm. Under-16s must be accompanied by an adult.

“next thing we will be taking part in is the Cleethorpes In Doom competition, we will be asked to roll our own wheely bins to the back of the bin wagon and hook them up to the wagaon then a speccially trained council operative will do a risk assessment before filing a requisition to press the button to empty the bin. Why is it that the public are being asked to "volunteer" to do work tradiitionally done by council employees. Is this the result of reducing services? Is this the way of the future? We pay our council tax to do the work ourselves? oh and to pay councillors to appear briefly at meetings and claaim their allowances, to appear in the paper with big smiles, to join the cabinet as inexperienced account holders and pay them above average wages for the area to learn on the job (and more often then not, fail on the job).”

“I wish they wouldn't spend my hard earned £1100 a year council tax on stupid flowers.i want them to get the roads up and running.its ridiculous,i can't even get out of cleethorpes for road works.also why do they want us to give them a hand tidying up?haven't they got enough people supposedly working on the streets keeping it clean or are they too busy chatting? This area needs to get its priorities right.who really cares about a bunch of poxy flowers?also, don't the judges have a set route that they go down so only a part of grimsby and cleethorpes is tidy for the day of the judging and then left to gather more rubbish..instead of making an effort for one day they should do it all year round.”
