RE: The stealing of Gladys Nuttall's brass plaque.

Metal-thieving drug addicts desperate for their next fix? These addicts and drug dealers are without doubt the scourge of our society today.

What is surprising is why do people take these drugs like M-Cat, causing so much trouble when it's well known the devastating effects they have on the lives of those who take them?

What about if drugs were legal and only supplied through official outlets at a lower price with good advice and a constant strength so it would knock out the vast profits they are making?

Plus, what about all the prisons with more of the same offenders? Millions of pounds is spent trying to stop the unstoppable.

This money could be used to bring this thing under control because, sure as eggs are eggs, they are not having much success the way they are dealing with it now. And I don't think they ever will, except by filling the prisons.

And the Mr Bigs are just growing bigger and bigger.

If the punishment was more of a deterrent, it just might help.

In reality, we are all victims indirectly with higher insurance premiums because of what they do.

The Telegraph says:

Drugs, is legalising them the answer? Government and advisers have always been strongly against this. What do you think?

“I don't suggest I know everything about drugs and drug takers, and I don't offer a "magic bullet" to cure everything. I've suggested something like this myself, and there are still many many people who disagree with my views vehemently.

However my proposal would be to allow drugs to be prescribed. Those entitled to free prescriptions would get them free, those who pay for their prescriptions would continue to pay. There would be a record of those receiving such drugs, and (similar to cigarettes & alcohol) treatment offered and given to those who wish to try to reduce their intake.

Some people have said "I'm not paying for someone else's drugs". However through increased taxes to pay for policing and prohibition costs, plus increases in insurance, most people are paying for it one way or another. There's no doubt the savings made from reduced policing, prosecutions, and hospital costs would far outweigh the wholesale cost of producing, buying, and prescribing the drugs, plus the unquantifiable feeling of increased security.

Other people have suggested bigger punishments should be given as a detterent. I say look at China for instance. Their are massive penalties for selling, trafficking, and using drugs, and yet it still goes on. There's no evidence to suggest that system has any positive effects.

Time for a radical re-think, and a big change, as what we've currently got surely isn't working.”

“Tougher punishment really is required. The current system doesn't provide enough of a deterrent, and the same people continue to use drugs, regardless of whether or not they get caught. And as for the dealers, a few years imprisonment for a lifetime of not working for a living... That actually sounds like quite a cushy deal.

I doubt very much that legalising the use of drugs would eliminate the crime and anti-social behaviour that goes with it. Sure, organised crime may be hit hard but the user at the bottom the chain will still be under the influence of drugs, most likely be jobless and will still need to pay for his habit.”

“A very sensible option, commonsense at last. Not everybody who uses substances is an addict and they are all tarred with the same brush as the minority who abuse themselves to the extreme.”
