ALL 2,500 employees at Grimsby's hospital have been invited to volunteer for redundancy to help cover a £5-million pound funding shortfall.

The members of staff at the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital have received letters from the chief executive, Andrew North, asking interested people to put themselves forward for redundancy, retirement or a reduction in hours.

Bosses at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust anticipate a £14-million hole in next year's budget for the Scartho Road site and its sister hospitals in Scunthorpe and Goole.

This is because while the cost of staff and equipment will increase in 2010/11, the trust's funding from the Government will not.

The trust has already saved £9-million through a scheme which encouraged every department in each hospital to make money-saving changes.

But £5-million still needs to be saved, which the trust hopes will come from cutting back staff – which currently accounts for 70 per cent of hospital spending.

Letters have also been sent to Scunthorpe General Hospital, which has 2,500 employees, and Goole, which employs about 800.

Initially, trustees proposed pay freezes for all employees against the national pay agreement but this was met with opposition from the Unison union, as reported.

Employees wishing to take redundancy, early retirement or hours cut back have until March 31 to come forward.

Trust spokesman Simon Rigg reiterated: "An expression of interest does not guarantee we will be able to fulfil their wishes and clearly the evaluation of each request will be designed to ensure the loss of the post will not have an adverse impact on patient care."

“The reason care is less available, is the places are already run on skeleton staff, some wards, down one member of staff per shift already, how would cutting 10 per cent help ? Hull did this a few years ago now, got rubbish ratings, and now has again recruited !!!! managers should go, all these who are directors, we don't need that many managers, and 3 nurses for their 60 grand salaries each makes more sense does it not ? ?? Porters and ancillary staff ARE valued and needed very much so. I think that it's management who should be volunteering, but My bet is the clinical staff will, for fear of getting struck off, due to even worse staffing levels, which will in turn lead to even worse staffing, and care standards. THis 30 grand for pictures is pathetic, as is the alterations yet again to the car parking, and other unnecessary expenditure. there are more nurse specialists than ever there was, get rid of some of them on their 35 grand a year and pay 1 and a half nurses or 2 porters or more in their wake !! wake up nhs, it's not clinical staff on the wards that we need less of ! I think we all should be charged insurance, and this would stop.”

“I agree with porter the staff that get paid little are the ones that work the hardest!! for all the pen pushers who are getting band 3, 4 and even 5 for half of the work and stress as we are getting!! The staffing levels are already appaling so how can we take redundancy and the patient care won't be affected when it already is!! Staff are un able to take breaks as its sooo busy!! how's that safe for them and the patients?? And what about the waste of money the trust is spending?? £35,000 on pictures to decorate the corriders!! If we are having to say so much money maybe these should not have been purchased!!!! Jobs that are really not needed are also a waste of the money!! All the people that are behind the scenes and are getting paid a silly wage should be the ones that come forward for redundancy!!! Think of how much money we would save then!!!!!!! and let all us staff run the hospital as we are the ones that know what we need and thats more.. STAFF!!”

“It seems like various people have had different experiences at this hospital.
Personally, having suffered a heart attack a couple of weeks ago, I can't praise the care that I received highly enough.
OK, parts of the building are looking a bit tired, and not every bit of the infrastructure works as well as one has a right to expect, but the nursing staff, the auxiliaries, the cleaners, and the doctors are first class, and most of the equipment essential for my treatment worked when needed. So to the staff of C3, CCU, and C1 Kendall, thank you very much for a job well done.
To the members of admin who have been defending their jobs on here, if you are part of the support staff needed to ensure that the hospital runs smoothly then you deserve to be there. If however you are part of the N.L. army that has been recruited to do nothing other than "spy" on the hospital, reporting on how government imposed targets for throughput and spending are being met, then maybe you are a large part of the reason for the overspend.”

“I have to say that as a patient / victim of this awful place, this comes as no surprise at all. The sooner they close the place and flatten it for building land the better. I know this will probably infuriate a few locals but my family and I and have had nothing less than shocking treatment and care over the years from this hospital. My young son has been left with a lifelong disability as a result of poor care from staff at this hospital. My late mother's cancer was misdiagnosed and that's just a start. I think saving money is the least of the hospital managers problems. Perhaps if they could get the basic and fundamental elements of care right, people would stop suing them and therefore, money would be saved.”
