Removal of Residents Parking areas
I live in Earl Street. Grimsby in one of our towns Resident Parking Areas (area E).
I appearer in The Grimsby Telegraph on 14th November 2012. page 3 after being stopped and interviewed in the street by one of your reporters.
Following on from the Grimsby Telegraph article of the 14th I liased with Councilor Andrew De Freitas of Park Ward and thanked him for the stand that he was taking to try and retain our Residents Parking Zones.
Councilor De Freitas is tabeling a motion to The Regeneration and Environment Scruteny Committie on 29th November 2012 and arguing the case for keeping the existing scheames.

I personally have sent three e mails to each of my two ward councilors, Darren Billard and Ian Lindley of West Marsh ward asking that they support Councilor De Freitas in his opposition to the removal of our residents parking zones. I am very disapointed that niether of my two ward councilors have replied to me at all over the matter!
Myself and other residents that I have spoken to do not feel that we have been consulted over this matter. The correspondence that the council sent out was very ambigious and missleading and any interpretation that has been drawn from the public responce or the lack of it should be set aside.
Residents Only Parking Zones were created for a reason and those reasons have not gone away or changed.
Is the council wanting to make all of its services self financing, just some of its services and how is it decided?
Myself and many other Grimsby and Cleethorpes residents have much to greatful to councilor De Freitas for his eforts in trying to defend our quality of life. I just wish that our own ward councilors would apear to be as supportive to their constuants.

“What about this for a headline?
"RAISE COST OF PARKING TO FORCE MOTORISTS TO WALK! NANNY WATCHDOG'S PLAN TO GET BRITAIN FIT"
The advice from NICE, which sets national standards for healthcare, aims to get Britain fit and reduce disease in later life.
NICE ONE NICE, NICE ONE.
Doctors and nurses are told to set a good example 'through their own behaviour' AND TOWN HALLS ARE URGED TO 'RESTRAIN' CAR USE WITH PARKING RESTRICTIONS AND HIGHER FEES.

Those living close to town centres are lucky being so close to all public transport routes and shops should read the writing on the wall and sell their cars. Inactivity causes more health problems today than smoking.
Right off for my shower and then 5 miles walk into town, 5 miles back, two and a half hours of good exercise and THAT'S NICE.”

“Where are people living in Abbey Road and their visitors expected to park now there is a new parking restriction that only allows parking on one side of Welholme Avenue? This new restriction is completely unnecessary as the road is easily wide enough to allow parking on both sides, and there are now not enough available spaces.
This problem is made worse by council employees working at the Elms who park in the street to avoid the parking fee imposed by the Council. We now have an empty car park at the Elms and insufficient spaces for street parking in Abbey Road or Welholme Avenue.
Well done NELC- you have managed to create a problem in the area that has not brought any benefit at all. Why not admit that charging your own staff for parking was a mistake, which is being made worse by your attitude to resident parking.
Your pig headedness is just causing more and more problems!!!”

“Nice one knuckledragger. Trying to make it look like I'm the one rigging the votes.
Better luck next time.”

“As someone who lives near Cleethorpes seafront we believe that residents only parking should be free.
The council are always moaning about the lack of revenue from the car-parks, no wonder when visitors can park in any of the seafront side streets for free, try doing that in any other resort.
The increased revenue from visitors forced to use the car-parks would more than pay for the extra footwork from the seafront traffic wardens.”

“Where are these parking areas?I thought the streets were there for us all to park on, not just a privelege for the few who can afford to pay.”

“Perhaps your ward councillors don't have the time to reply to your letters - after all with full-time jobs and other paid council positions it must be very difficult to find the time to reply to the people you represent from the ward that elected vou!”

“I don't understand why the council would not think that this isn't self financing, even at £15 pounds a year. Parking Enforcement Officers (Traffic Wardens in everything but name) surely have to patrol those areas from time to time anyway. Withdrawing this service will lead to a loss of income from car park fees, plus there will be a cost to remove all the signs.
As far as interest from councillors goes, it's a lot easier to support someone from a position of opposition, as Cllr De Frietas is doing. Having said that, Labour councillors tend to follow the "party line", but it's still a bit rude to not even reply. Residents know what to do at the next council election, don't vote for candidates who won't look after their local interests.
To a great extent I agree with what Justin has said, play people off against each other.”

“"Is the council wanting to make all of its services self financing, just some of its services and how is it decided?"
They'll do as they want. If they feel like axing a service or amenity they'll just arrange for an article to be published in the GT stating that everyone's council tax will need to go up if they are to continue providing the service. It's the first rule of management, play people off against each other.”
