MP's campaign to protect war memorials
WHAT are your Remembrance Day memories and stories?
As Cleethorpes MP Shona McIsaac launches a campaign to protect the nation's fading war memorials and rolls of honour, we want you to get in touch.
-

backing: Ms McIsaac has been supported by 71 MPs.
As reported, Ms McIsaac has asked the Government to formally recognise war memorials at risk through neglect, damage or development.
She tabled a motion in Parliament last night to protect memorials and rolls of honour not just in North East Lincolnshire but nationally.
It has already been supported by 71 MPs, including former Defence Secretary John Hutton and David Blunkett.
For years, Ms McIsaac has been recording names of the fallen on war memorials throughout Lincolnshire – an interest sparked by growing up in an Armed Forces family.
Now she wants memorials to be protected as a "fantastic tribute" to the fallen.
We will be reporting more on her research, but in the meantime, we want you to tell us your stories.

“Bob and Rob - I repeat this is a cross-party national campaign.
Rob - there is charitable funding available to help restore memoriaqls at risk. If any group here is struggling to raise the required match-funding, I would see what I could do to help. This would be a personal donation from my husband and I. We make many personal charitable donations every year.
Bob - at the heart of the problem is that those responsible for crime and asb have not been using the powers they have to full effect. As I helped take the Anti-Social Behaviour Act through Parliament, I have been axasperated that our area has lagged behing in using all the powers they have. I have raised this with the Home Sec, which is why he recently told this area to get its act together.”

“But Shona.
What are YOU doing about the soaring crime in YOUR area. If we believe Labour numbers everywhere else has reducing crime but not here.
AGAIN what are YOU doing?”

“I've read this discussion with great interest. It seems to have sparked the imagination as lots of people have been in touch today to say this is a great idea.
Major - this is a backbench campaign supported by all political parties. It is vital this is a non-polical campaign.
Jenny - I agree that serving soldiers need the best equipment and my comments on this have been reported in the GT.
Bob - the application for the debate was made before the news about crime here broke. However, my comments about crime and asb have recently been reported in the GT - who should be praised for the long-running Enough campaign.
To those worried about money - the majority of funding to restore memorials came from a charity.
I hope people will read my comments in ful - where I do mention current conflicts.

And finally, I have been publishing the info on memorials in our area on my website for years.”

“Some of you people make me sick. I lost a good many friends in conflicts and their memory is precious to me. Well done Mrs Mcissac for having the common decency to stand up for the lads and lasses who these memorials recognise because otherwise they would be forgotten.”

“Our War Memorials are a silent and personal tribute to our fallen and not a political show of rememberance to help heal the guilt of the Government of the day.”

“Shona, rather than spend money on remebering our fallen hero's why not spend it on protecting our armed services. That way you wouldn't need memorials because they would be coming home safe. Its like spending your budget on coffins instead of bullet proof vests! Pathetic!”

“So as violence in the NELC area soars past a 20% increase this year (Humberside police website) this woman spends her time on a save the memorials battle.
Ms McIsaccs you definitely need to get a sense of priority and do more than just jump on soapboxes every 12 months thinking we cannot see through you.
Heres an idea Shona - give this campaign to your friend on the War Graves committee and spend YOUR time rattling a few Justice Ministry cages for us to get the scum off our streets. Only an idea love - dont get a sweat on.”
