Restored Cleethorpes Pier 'will be envy of other resorts'
CLEETHORPES' Pier is undergoing major renovation amid plans to "restore the venue's iconic status" – and create 30 jobs.
The resort's landmark will open its doors on December 1 as an all-round entertainments and family venue, which its new management team hopes will be "the envy of other seaside towns".
In what could prove to be the resort's replacement for the much-missed Winter Gardens, the floor from the Kingsway venue, which was knocked down in 2007, has been fitted in the Pier's restaurant.
And the new managers say they have been approached by people hoping to bring back the Bag's Ball.
New leaseholder Alistair Clugston – who runs the Old Barn Inn in Tealby – has taken on the venue and plans to make it "much more than just a nightclub".
He said: "I want to make this landmark a magnet for the area – somewhere that all local people can enjoy and be proud of."
The Pier will serve food between 11am and 9pm as the front building is renamed Tides Bar and Restaurant, making the building a place for families once again.
In time, Mr Clugston also hopes to open the main hall for conferences, community events and even kids parties to make the building a "24/7 venue", he said.
Cleethorpes Pier is one of just 58 left in the UK but it has been closed since previous leaseholders surrendered their licence in September following a catalogue of serious crime and disorder.
As reported, the venue was closed for 28 days after two men leapt from the end of the Pier – one breaking both of his legs – to escape pursuers after an altercation at the venue in the early hours of August 29.
Within weeks, co-directors Steve Calladine and Stephen Grevitt decided to pull out of the venue altogether.
But, despite its chequered past, the future looks bright for the venue once more – a total of 29,000 LED lights have been installed and the view onto the Humber will be widened.
Mr Clugston said: "I am looking at restoring the iconic status that this venue once had.
"I have used local contractors for the refurbishment, I will use local suppliers for the food and it will create jobs for local people – I want it to give the area a lift.
"People are staying in Britain for holidays during this recession but not every town has a pier.
"The town has won the In Bloom competition, the seaside is beautifully kept and it deserves to have a building like this one which will make it the envy of other seaside towns."
Ward councillor Leanor Pidgen (Lib, Croft Baker) said: "I really hope that the ideas the new management have work and the Pier can offer family entertainment again.
"I am pleased it will open in the day and use local suppliers and, fingers crossed, it will become a real draw for Cleethorpes."
Mr Clugston also said that he was keen to address the problems that had previously marred its reputation.
He added: "We are working closely with the police, council and fire brigade to make sure that we stay within the law.
"People will not be able to walk in blind drunk and cause trouble – we don't want their custom."
Mr Clugston's plans for the nightclub include having up to double the amount of door staff as before, introducing a dress code and operating an over-21 policy for the majority of events.
There have been 36 cameras installed so events are properly monitored.
The sound levels will also be regulated to avoid the problems with noise which previously upset many residents after being taken over in 2010.
A spokesman for Humberside Police said: "We are looking forward to working with the new management to address the concerns that have been well documented lately."
Cliff Barber, chair of North East Lincolnshire Council's licensing sub-committee, said: "Mr Clugston seems to have some good ideas and suggestions.
"He sounds willing to co-operate with the relevant parties and hopefully it will be a venture that everyone will be pleased with."

“Great news, and please bring back the Bags Ball, I spent many a happy Wednesday night listening to Sandra Brown murder popular songs whilst slamming vodka at the bar before picking up some old dog.
The old Pier 69 was a good night out too, we had no money and would get in using the vouchers in the Tellywag then we'd spend the night minesweeping people's drinks, ah the good old days, 4 million on the dole, girls who would ask you what your job was before asking your name and not a hint of the global meltdown to come - happier times.”

“Mr Clugston, can we have some Latin American and Ballroom dances please? I've seen some old photographs of dance competitions held there over the years and they look fantastic. If there is to be a true replacement for the Winter Gardens there has to be more going on than what seems to be on offer in the article.”

“The pier failed as a Nightclub
The pier failed as a Roller skating rink.
The pier was a success when it was used by mary owen as a flea market (sundays)
The pier was a success when it staged live shows and pantomines
you choose, the clue is in the above”

“I'm pleased this venue is reopening but i must say many years ago it was child friendly and i remember taking my kids there on a sunday for a free family disco. I dont think this will work as a nightclub but if it has to be one at least make it 25+.We oldies have nowhere to go except Reflex which is ok but we need the old nostalger back ie pantomimes, good comedians and the like. The auditorium is too pricey for some families to go so maybe if they made it a good cheap day and evening out for the family would b ideal”

“I was all excited reading this story until i got to the part where it said Nightclub then my reaction was "oh no here we go again". why does it need to be a nightclub? its never ever worked properly as a nightclub. keeping it as nightclub is a huge mistake even if it has extra door staff or not.the venue is not intended for been a nightclub, it was never build for that purpose. it was built for a family entertainment venue that stages shows and live shows. all i can say is i'll keep watching this space in a few months when it starts going down hill yet once more.”

“Smoker -
I really do hope this venture is a success based upon Mr CLUGSTONs plan as the Pier does deserve better than what it has been used for over recent years.
With reference to the Winter Gardens, sadly nothing will ever replace the atmosphere and nostalgia that was lost forever when greed resulted in the demolition of said premises.”

“Wednesday night at the Winter Gardens was famous worldwide, especially in the contracting fraternity........"grab a granny" should be revived......it was better fun than the jokes made it out to be.”
