Rowan and Henry do Grimsby Harriers proud with three PBs apiece
BEING too young for the Lincolnshire League Cross Country competitions hasn't stopped two young athletes from enjoying some winter racing.
Grimsby Harriers Rowan Swinburn and Henry Cullen – both nine-year-olds – have entered the four fixtures in the South Yorkshire Indoor Open Series of 2012/13.
The events, for Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 age groups, take place at the English Institute of Sport (EIS) in Sheffield.
And in the third fixture, earlier this month, both of the talented pair produced personal best times in three events.
Swinburn dipped under the ten-second barrier in the 60m with 9.87, before shading a whole second off her 150m time, with 24.37.
She then took a fantastic three seconds off her 600m mark, finishing in a time of 2 min 17.36 secs.
Cullen, meanwhile, set a benchmark of 10.26 in the 60m, as well as clearing the three-metre barrier in the long jump to record a height of 3.05m.
A brilliant run in the 600m also saw him take a massive three seconds off his previous best, to register a time of 2:01.93.
And it shouldn't be long before the promising youngster breaks that two-minute barrier – a mark that all Under-11 athletes aspire to reach.
Grimsby Harriers welcome anyone aged seven and over with an interest in athletics. The club offers a range of opportunities for people from beginner's level through to regional and national standard. The club has a number of coaches across the events spectrum. Training is on Monday and Wednesday nights at Grimsby's King George V Stadium, 5.45pm-7.30pm – don't worry if you can't attend both days.
