PEOPLE from across the world can now visit Grimsby – without leaving the comfort of their own home.

Homes, cars and even people can now be viewed on-line at the click of a mouse, after the North East Lincolnshire became one of the latest areas to be added to web sensation Google Street View.

The tool, providing 360-degree images of public roads, was launched in the UK in March last year, initially focusing on just 25 cities.

Scenes from Street View including Grimsby Town Hall.

As reported, the car – mounted with special cameras that stitches together panoramic photographs of areas for the internet search engine – was spotted in the Grimsby area in April last year.

And now, users can zoom in on those images and use them to take a virtual walk along whole streets.

To find out more, see today's Grimsby Telegraph.

To try out Google Street View yourself log on to www.google.co.uk/help/maps/streetview/ and click on try street view.

“John at home wrote: "without the cameras that is 162,000 crimes that the police would not have solved"
    .
But thats not the point, John.
CCTV might have helped to *catch* 162,000 criminals, but how many *more* crimes might have been *prevented* in the first place had there been a regular and visible police presence in high crime areas?
How many people would heve been saved the fear and emotiotional devastation of being victims? How much Police and court time wouldn't have been wasted - *after* the event? And how much would have been saved in Insurance payouts?

I'm not against CCTV in principle, and in places like shopping malls or busy Railway Station where a constant police presence may not be viable, they can be useful aid in Police investigations. But to altogether replace 'Bobbies on the beat' with cctv and employ them as means of preventing crime - well, it simply hasn't worked.”
