Apologetic statements were issued as soon as it was discovered and health officials fell over themselves to assure us all that there was no danger whatever to our health if we ate the burgers.
While the BBC and some papers were trying themselves in knots over this the internet burst into immediate life when the news broke with literally thousands of jokes on the subject.
A typically British reaction and great to see.

“I have no issue eating horse meat, in fact I rather like it. The issue with this story is that if 29% of an economy burger (of which on 62% has to be meat anyway) is horse rather than beef, what other contaminants can also get into the food supply?”

“Personally, I don't have a problem with horse meat being in the food chain. I just think its deplorable the manufacturers of these burgers acted like our council. Kept everyone in the dark and only owned up to it when it was too late for anyone to do anything about it.”
