THE spread of the saltmarsh on Cleethorpes beach must be stopped.

That was the unanimous call from councillors on the Saltmarsh Select Committee who have recommended the council go direct to the Government for action.

Committee chairman Councillor Martin Vickers said a recommendation to Cabinet had been approved by members from all the political parties.

It had come after they toured Southport beach and saw what happens when the spread of saltmarsh is not halted.

At Cleethorpes, the saltmarsh has spread north beyond the leisure centre and is advancing on the award-winning beach.

Councillors are anxious it could deter visitors in future.

The committee gathered evidence about the potential impact on the tourist economy of Cleethorpes.

More than a quarter of the workforce in Cleethorpes is reliant upon the tourist trade.

Cllr Vickers said: “As a result of our survey, and evidence we have taken from visitors and businesses in Cleethorpes, there is a clear and almost unanimous view that action should be taken to prevent the spread north of the leisure centre.”

The committee recommended Cabinet members take a firm stand with Natural England.

Cllr Vickers said: “If they are not prepared to reach a compromise we recommended they go over their heads and seek the support of relevant minister to adopt a balanced view.”

He was critical of North East Lincolnshire Council officers who had been “underwhelming” in their assessment of the impact on the tourist trade.

The recommendation will go to Cabinet members in a few weeks.
